U12 North Antrim Indoor League Final

A large crowd gathered at 7 Towers Leisure Centre last Saturday for the finale of the GAAkit.com U12 North Antrim Indoor League when six divisional titles were up for grabs.

Teams qualified for the finals by competing in a series of blitz style grading and qualifying games that were played over the previous two weeks. After an initial hiccup in their first match, in week one, All Saints went through the rest of the league unbeaten to qualify for the Division 3 final with Bredagh. When the two teams met previously, in a qualifying round, All Saints edged the contest by a single goal so confidence was high when they lined out on Saturday.

At the throw in Bredagh came out of the traps with all guns blazing and with deep penetrating runs they caused the All Saints midfield to be pulled out of shape and put severe pressure on the defence. Bredagh scored two goals before the Ballymena boys  had time to recover from the initial onslaught. However they didn’t panic and in goals Conor O’Rawe held on to the ball, allowing the team to settle and rediscover their shape. Cormac Magill went man to man with the Bredagh full forward and nullified their main scoring threat. Ryan McGarry moved into fifth gear tackling and striking well and supplying good ball to the forward line where Eoin McNally and Ruairi McAllister started to torment the opposition back line. The tide was quelled and the half time whistle provided a respite and a chance to plan a fight back.

Alex O’Boyle, Seamus O’Hara and James O’Boyle were introduced in the second half. They added an extra dimension to attack and mid field but the St Bredagh net minder was in top form and he intercepted all goal bound shots.

Mid way through the second half a cruel blow scuttled any attempt of a come back. An attack by Bredagh was well marshalled by the All Saints defence when a ball which looked to be cleared from danger was deflected off a stick and ended in the Ballymena net. Despite fantastic efforts by each one of the lads, goals eluded them and Bredagh went on to win the match 3:0.

Although disappointed to lose, the boys can be proud of their performance on the day and throughout the competition. Congratulations to St Bredagh for a well deserved victory – we look forward to meeting them again during the season.

U12s Reach North Antrim Indoor League Final

Congratulations to our U12 hurlers who qualified for the GAAkit.com North Antrim Indoor League final.

The qualifying stages of this competition were played last Saturday at six venues across Antrim and Derry. At each venue teams competed in a round robin for the prize of a place in the final for the two top placed teams.

All Saints played in section three at St Patrick’s College. They played four matches winning three and drawing one to finish in pole position in their group, Bredagh finished in second spot; the two teams will meet next Saturday in the section 3 final at Seven Towers Leisure Centre.

This promises to be an intriguing contest between two evenly matched teams. When they met on Saturday the contest was a close affair and with both defences in uncharitable mood scores were at a premium. The game was decided by a single goal in All Saints favour.

Some veterans of this squad played in last year’s final when they lost out to Rossa in a nail biting encounter which needed extra time to decide the winner. Last year’s experience should stand them in good stead and we wish the lads good luck as they try to go one better this time.

We encourage everyone to come along on Saturday to support the team and hopefully see them collect the first silverware of the year for All Saints.

All Saints Team

Ryan McGarry, Eoin McGuigan, Cormac Magill, Luke Mulholland, Ruairi McAllister, James O’Boyle, Calum McGarry, Eamon McDonnell, Conor O’Rawe, Eoin McNally.

Co Down Indoor League

Following their exploits in the North Antrim League the U12s travelled to Bangor’s Eddie Irvine Centre on Sunday to play in the Co Down Indoor League.

While the North Antrim competition is designed to promote ground hurling the Down league allows catching and striking from the hand. Again the lads did extremely well, winning all their games. They return to Bangor next Sunday for another round of matches.

We would like to thank Michael McCullough (Down Hurling Development Officer) for inviting us to participate in this competition and to the other teams we played against for a very enjoyable day’s hurling.

Athbhliain Faoi Mhaise Daoibh

Happy New Year! We hope you had a great Christmas and that Santa was good.

Our U10 and U12 hurlers started the New Year with a bang last Wednesday night. The lads burned off any residual turkey and sweets with an action packed session at St Louis Grammar. It didn’t take long for the boys to get into their rhythm and start hurling with enthusiasm.

At the end of the night there were a few blistered hands indicating that some of the lads had allowed their hurls to gather a few cobwebs over the winter. However, with an action packed season ahead, hands will soon toughen up and any tenderness will be a distant memory.

U12 North Antrim Indoor Blitz

The U12s did not have long to wait for competitive action as they played the first round of matches in the North Antrim Indoor League on Saturday at St Patrick’s College. They did really well, finishing joint top of their section. They learned from a narrow defeat to Dungannon in their first game to win their next three matches with Patrick Pearse’s, Shane O’Neill’s and St Gall’s.

The final match against St Gall’s was a real edge of the seat affair with both teams evenly matched. The score was three each approaching full time. Just at the finish Ryan McGarry shot from an acute angle sending the sliotar goal ward, as the ball ricocheted off the back wall the whistle blew and the referee declared a draw. As the two teams shook hands the St Gall’s manager stepped forward to declare that Ryan’s shot had in fact entered the goal before passing through the net and hitting the wall, the game was duly awarded to All Saints.

Long after the euphoria of winning has abated the boys will remember this display of sportsmanship from the St Gall’s management and team. Sportsmanship like this is not unusual in juvenile hurling games; nonetheless, it is always a privilege to witness and is a great example for youngsters to emulate as they grow and mature. We hope that this magnanimous gesture brings St Gall’s good fortune in the rest of the competition.
