Match Reports
U8s
Our U8s had their first run out this season when they competed in a blitz in Cushendall. They got off to a flying start against Cushendun when Maria O’Rawe scored the only goal of the game. Buoyed by this victory the team put in some great performances in the rest of their matches and thoroughly enjoyed themselves. The experience and confidence gained from their performances will stand to them in future matches.
Thanks to North Antrim for organising the event and the Ruairi Óg club for hosting the teams.
U12s
U12 League v Glenarm
Two weeks ago our U12s travelled to Feystown for an U12 league match. The squad was depleted somewhat due to injuries and end of school commitments but the lads put up a spirited display against a strong Glenarm side.
P5/P6 Blitz
The following week we were due to host a P5/P6 blitz at Slemish Park, however a number of South West Antrim teams failed to field and unfortunately the blitz was cancelled. We have made a decision to ask that All Saints be included at a North Antrim venue for future blitzes.
Feis na nGleann
At the end of May we entered the Feis na nGleann ten a side ground hurling competition. The event saw the welcome return of Daire Hasson. Daire had been out of action since sustaining an injury when playing football in Croke Park in April. He played in goals where he anchored an impressive defensive unit in which Conor McCormick, Joseph McCann and Padhraig Magill excelled. Conor O’Rawe continued some recent good form at training with two fine goals.
The lads done very well and they qualified for the final after a play off with Rasharkin. The final, played in Glenariffe, was against Glenarm. The lads needed little motivation as they were keen to reverse the result of their previous meeting. A strong wind blew down the glen making conditions less than ideal for hurling but both teams put on a great show. Playing against the wind in the first half All Saints had to withstand a lot of pressure before relief came in the form of a great point by Ryan McGarry scored from mid field. Glenarm came back with a wind assisted point from a sideline cut to leave the score equal at half time. The lads felt confident as they fielded for the second half. Ronan Ward came on for the injured Cormac Lemon and added strength at mid field. Things were looking good but we could not convert possession into scores. Then came the sucker punch – a seemingly harmless shot that was going wide deflected off a stick and the sliotar took a wicked change of direction and ended in the Ballymena goal. There was little time to recover and the lads learned what every Louth supporter knows – sport can sometimes be a cruel.
The boys can be proud of their achievement and an ice cream on the way home went a little way to ease the disappointment.
Congratulations
Congratulations to Colum Neeson who lined out at full back on the St Brendan’s team that won the McMullan Cup (U16 North Antrim Championship) on Feis Sunday. Colum helps to coach our juveniles; we wish him and St Brendan’s well in the county final later in the year.
U12 League v Randalstown
The lads were back in action on Saturday when they played Randalstown at home. Winning by 2:02 to 0:01 at half time this game looked in the bag, but Randalstown came out strongly and took the lead before All Saints came back to restore order.
This was a great team performance in which everyone played their part. Anthony McGuigan, in goals, marshalled the defence and set up attacks with astute puck outs.
In front of him Alex Swann, Conor McCormick and Padhraig Magill made up a mean back line. Eamon Elliott and Eoin McGuigan scored a point each and along with Ryan McGarry, Calum McGarry and Ronan Ward their movement and passing showed great vision and maturity. Up front Ryan McKenna, Conor O’Rawe and Niall O’Kane were unfortunate not to get a score or two; their efforts caused disarray and a few nervous moments in the opposition defence. Conor Gallagher returned to the fold like the Prodigal Son and added strength to the half back line. Ciarán Neeson, who missed the Feis due to injury made an impressive comeback, capped by a late pile driver of a penalty, which would have done Henry Shefflin proud, to seal victory.
Final Score: All Saints 3:03 Randalstown 2:03

Match Report – All Saints v Rasharkin
Well done to our U12 team who travelled to Rasharkin on Saturday and came away with a win. All Saints had the lion’s share of the play in the first half but lacked cohesion and could not convert possession into scores. Things turned around in the second half when the lads steadied themselves and applied the adage “If you’re not in possession be in position.” Players with the ball were composed and team mates ran into space and created options. The net effect was that they produced some nice flowing moves that culminated in some fine scores.
Joseph McCann anchored the team at full back while on his side Padhraig Magill was solid and gave nothing away. The half back line of Ryan McGarry, Conor McCormick and Calum McGarry are developing into a formidable unit. Calum moved into mid field in the second half and scored a great point. Midfield partners, Ronan Ward and Eoin McGuigan gelled well. Eoin scored a lovely point from a 45 meter free and Ronan showed his versatility when he kept a clean sheet when he moved into goals for the second half. Up front Eamon Elliott and Ciarán Neeson always looked dangerous netting 02:04 between them. Conor Cosgrove, James Murphy and Cormac Magillwere always in the thick of the action; Conor produced a number of his trademark blocks breaking down the opposition attacks before they had time to start. Both Ryan McKenna and Cormac Magill were unfortunate not to get a score or two; their goal bound shots were parried by an alert Rasharkin keeper. Alex Swann and Ruairi Campbell each made impressive debuts, getting involved in plenty of action.
Winning is pleasing, performing well is better, but what really impressed was the way the lads conducted themselves and the sportsmanship they extended to the opposition and match officials. We are very proud of them.
Thanks to Owen Elliott for refereeing the match.

P5 – Y9 -06:30 – 08:00
There is no U12 match this week end, instead there will be a training session on Saturday 05th June at Slemish Park from 11:00 – 12:30 for P5 – Y9.
School Scene
The Ulster Council school-club coaching initiative continues in St Brigid’s and St Colmcille’s. Thanks to all teachers and staff involved and to the coach, PJ O’Mullan. PJ reports that there is some serious talent in the schools. A number of new faces have joined recently, we are delighted to see you and look forward to seeing more, so tell your friends to come along to training at Slemish Park.
Good luck to the hurlers of St Brigid’s who are taking part in a P5/P6 blitz in Crumlin on Friday.
Practise Your Skills at Home
All our young hurlers are progressing well and we have been impressed at the level of skill they have attained. The only way to improve is to practise, so, we encourage children to come along to training, learn new skills, and to practise at home as much as possible. Parents shouldn’t panic nor rush to take out additional glazing options on house insurance. Many hurling skills can be practised in a small area using a soft ball.
Parents are welcome to attend training to see the lads going through their paces. We are always glad to see parents getting involved and any help is always appreciated.
There are some excellent sites on the internet which demonstrate hurling skills and drills. We have listed some of the best.

Paudie Butler – Wall Ball
The best practise of all is to hit a ball off a wall. Ten minutes a day spent with a ball and a wall will improve striking and first touch like nothing else.

Honours Even Against Glenshesk
The U12 league kicked off last Saturday when we hosted Glenshesk in a close fought match at Slemish Park. Leading 02: 00 to 1:02 at half time, the match ended in a draw with a final score: All Saints 3:02 Glenshesk 2: 05.
Ciarán Neeson produced a man of the match performance in goals. He made a number of crucial saves and his long range puck outs reached deep into the Glenshesk half of the field, turning defence into attack in an instant. The defensive lines were solid; Conor McCormick controlled full back while Padhraig Magill found a niche for himself at corner back. Calum and Ryan McGarry put in good performances at half back, linking with the midfield pairing of Eoin McGuigan and Eamon Elliott who worked well together. Eoin’s relentless grafting complimented Eamon’s guile and ability to slip his marker to pick up loose ball. Up front, Ronan Ward led by example, while Patrick O’Hara, James Murphy and Cormac Magill were a constant threat and Ryan McKenna, on his debut put on an impressive display. Conor Cosgrove and Sean and Conor O’Rawe were delayed with other sporting commitments, (good athletes are always in demand), but played well when they came on in the second half.
All Saints led by a point at half time and could have gone on to win but they lost their shape for a while in the second half and allowed Glenshesk to come back. This taught the lads the importance of holding their position, staying focussed and closing down opponents quickly.
This was an enjoyable game and a great boost to the lads whose confidence was dented somewhat after losing to Cushendall in a challenge match the week before. They can take a lot of positives from their display including some timely tackles, the pick of which was a block made at full stretch by Conor Cosgrove late in the game to deny Glenshesk a winning point.
Thanks to Glenshesk for a very sporting encounter and to Owen Elliott for refereeing the match and letting the game flow. Readers of the Irish News should note that Paddy Heaney’s views were directed at football referees, the reputation our own inter county referee remains unsullied!

Club – School Coaching Initiative
Over the past two school terms, Ulster Council sponsored a scheme which delivered hurling coaching in the local primary schools. The benefits and importance of strong links between the schools and the club is well recognised. Following discussions with Ulster Council, and in partnership with St Colmcille’s and St Brigid’s we have brokered additional coaching for the schools.
PJ O’Mullan, ex goal keeper and current senior manager of Loughguille Shamrocks, will coach P5 and P6 pupils. He will follow up the school sessions by working along with club coaches at Wednesday night training. PJ is an excellent coach with a wealth of experience coaching at underage and senior level. He is no stranger to Slemish Park as he played juvenile football for All Saints up to minor. He visited the club last week to meet the coaches and players and took an action packed session where he emphasised the importance of concentration, performing skills and drills at pace and playing with commitment. The lads enjoyed the session and learned a lot, we were delighted with the way they listened and responded to his tuition.
The programme continues for the next few weeks. We encourage all players to make a special effort to attend training and make the most of this opportunity. Newcomers are particularly welcome, so if you have a friend who does not currently play hurling this is an ideal time to encourage him to start. We are confident that this pilot scheme will be successful and will be expanded in future years.
We would like to thank Mr McKenna and Mr Brady, the principals of St Colmcille’s and St Brigid’s, for their continuous promotion of gaelic games and to Kieran Megraw, Antrim Hurling Director, for organising the scheme.
If you want to know more about the programme or have any question about underage hurling contact Paddy – 07708878968.

Feile Uladh 2010
The full back line in the famous Tipperary team of the 1960’s was renowned for their resolute defence. In an era before the plague of celebrity chefs and reality TV, the area around the Tipperary goal mouth was known as “Hell’s Kitchen”.
The kitchen reopened under new ownership last Saturday, and the cookers were reignited as our young hurlers faced up to a series of challenges from bigger and stronger teams in the Ulster Feile. This U14 competition was a baptism of fire for the boys, all of whom are eligible to play U14 again next year and thirteen of whom are still U12. While initially awestruck by their looming opponents they composed themselves and stood up to repel the onslaught. The captaincy was rotated amongst the more senior players, Luke O’Rawe, Anthony McGuigan, Terence Diamond and Jack McCann. Each showed real leadership by providing support and encouragement to their younger team mates. While beaten in all their games the lads showed great spirit throughout, making the opposition work hard for every score. The tackling was high octane and some of the hooking and blocking was top calibre.
All Saints took the plaudits for the best score of the afternoon; a long puck out from Ciarán Neeson in goal found Terence Diamond wide on the wing at midfield, Terence caught the ball and gave a crisp diagonal pass into Anthony McGuigan who had eluded his marker. Anthony ran on to the ball picked it first time and slotted it over the bar. Simple and direct – hurling at its best.
The lads learned a lot from the event and each received a sliotar in acknowledgement of their efforts.
Originally the Feile was to be held at Slaughtneil, however plans changed at the eleventh hour and All Saints were asked to host the event. We would like to thank:
- Everyone who helped out with preparing pitches, organising teams, stewarding, providing hospitality and clearing up afterwards. Your help is greatly appreciated.
- Ulster Council for organising the event and to Jimmy Darragh, venue coordinator.
- Gareth Brown and Colm Cunning for refereeing the matches.
- The players and mentors of Gort na Móna, St Mary’s Rasharkin, Buncrana and Na Magha Derry for their competitive sportsmanship.
- O’Neill’s Sportswear for sponsoring sliotars.
- Parents and members who came along to support the team.
- Our young hurlers for their effort, sportsmanship and exemplary behaviour throughout the day. As always, they were great ambassadors for the club, welcoming hosts to the visiting teams and a credit to their families.

Lá na gClub
Along with every GAA club in the country All Saints will celebrate Lá na gClub (Club Day) on Sunday 09th May. A series of events will be held throughout the day to celebrate the GAA in the community. The theme is promotion of “Youth Through Volunteerism”. Plans for the day are not complete but we encourage everyone to buy into the theme and volunteer your support in whatever way you can. A juvenile meeting to arrange events will be held on Thursday 08th July at St Brigid’s primary school at 7pm.
Suggestions for hurling include:
Parish League
P5 – Y9 hurlers will be divided into three teams, eight or nine a side, according to town land. The teams will play each other in a round robin league. Matches will last for 15 minutes (7.5 minutes each half). If level at full time the winner will be decided by a “golden score”. Total running time – 1 hour.
Road to Croker
A mini All Ireland for P1 – P4 hurlers. Six teams of three or four a side, will play on three pitches named, Croke Park, Casement Park and Slemish Park. There will be three sets of games – quarter finals, semi finals and finals. After each quarter and semi final the winners move towards Croke Park, losers move towards Slemsih Park, (in the event of a draw the team that scores first moves up). At the end of two games the two top ranking teams will find themselves at Croke Park, two middle ranks will be at Casement and the third ranking teams will be at Slemish Park. The three finals are therefore played between teams of comparable standard.
Running time – Quarter and Semi Finals, 7 – 8 minutes straight through.
Finals – 15 minutes with half time (7.5 minutes per half)
Total running time – 45 minutes.
Once finalised the schedule for the day will be posted on the club website:

School Scene
Local primary schools, St Brigid’s and St Colmcille’s, competed in a Cumannn na mBunscol 7 a side hurling blitz last Thursday. Both teams did very well and reached the semi final stages of the competition. They were pipped at the penultimate hurdle by St Joseph’s Crumlin and Creggan respectively. However, All Saints were represented in the final by Conor Gallagher who lined out for St Joseph’s.
Congratulations to everyone involved on a great performance which is just reward for the hard work being done promoting hurling in the primary schools. We are delighted to support the schools in any way we can and we look forward with confidence to the near future when St Brigid’s and St Colmcille’s hurlers will meet in a hurling final.

Please bring any old clothes, duvets etc. for recycling and leave them at Slemish Park during training times.
Thank you in advance for your contribution.
(Please check pockets for money and duvets for indolent teenagers before bagging).
Lá na gClub
Following the success of Lá na gClub in 2009 the GAA plans to celebrate the importance of the GAA in the community on Sunday May 9th. Counties have been instructed to keep the morning and afternoon fixture free to enable all members to fully participate in this event.
The theme for this year’s day is the promotion of “Youth through Volunteerism”. Every club is encouraged to participate and strive to match the huge success of last year’s events. U12 Footballers at Croke Park
Congratulations to our U12 footballers who played at Croke Park on Easter Tuesday. A biblical rain shower baptised the lads as they ran onto the hallowed turf amid the cheers of the travelling supporters. Everyone put in a massive performance during two exciting games in which the lads drew with St Brigid’s and shaded a close encounter with St Jame’s Aldergrove with a couple of points to spare.
Unfortunately Dáire Hasson came off injured after shipping a crunching tackle in the first game. He was taken to hospital where it was confirmed that he had broken his collar bone. Following expert care by staff at St John’s Ambulance and Temple Street Hospital he was discharged in time to meet up with the rest of his team mates for a celebratory burger at McDonalds.
His injury is a double blow for All Saints as Dáire is a dual star in both football and hurling. However, apart from the fracture, his X-ray revealed that Dáire has GAA DNA in his bones, so we are sure that he will be back playing soon and we join all his team mates in wishing him a speedy recovery.
Spring Clean and Support Your Club!
All Saints are organising a collection of used clothes and textiles for recycling, week commencing Monday 19th April. We did this last year, and thanks to your support it was a good fundraiser. Please bring any old clothes, duvets etc. for recycling and leave them at Slemish Park during training times.
Thank you in advance for your contribution.
(Please check pockets for money and duvets for indolent teenagers before bagging).
Lá na gClub
Following on from the success of Lá na gClub in 2009 the GAA plans to celebrate the importance of the GAA in the community on Sunday May 9th. Counties have been instructed to keep the morning and afternoon fixture free to enable all members to fully participate in this event.
The theme for this year’s day is the promotion of “Youth through Volunteerism”. Every club is encouraged to participate and strive to match the huge success of last year’s events. Plans for the day are at an early stage but we encourage everyone to buy into the theme and volunteer your support in whatever way you can.

U12 Challenge Match v Cushendall
Our U12s hosted Cushendall on Saturday in a challenge match at Slemish Park. We started well and put the visitors under pressure from the throw in. However we could not translate possession into scores and Cushendall gradually settled and gained the upper hand.
Before the match we asked the lads to go out and enjoy themselves, take chances and not to be nervous about making mistakes. We were impressed by how quickly they learnt from early errors and started to chase loose ball, close down opponents and to move when striking to avoid hooks and blocks. Their improvement was such that they outscored Cushendall in the second half.
One of our senior hurlers who watched the game commented that it was a long time since he had seen a Ballymena side match a team from Cushendall. This is a testament to Cushendall’s reputation as a centre of hurling and to the ambition of our young hurlers to forge a similar reputation for All Saint’s.
Final Score: All Saints 3:04 Cushendall 4:09

We hope to arrange a few more challenge matches in the next few weeks. We could not manage to get a game organised for this Saturday; we will have a training session outdoors at Slemish Park instead (03:30 – 05:00).

St Brigid’s win Indoor 7’s Competition
The young hurlers from St Brigid’s were crowned winners of the inter school hurling competition last Thursday. They beat St Joseph’s Crumlin in a nail biting final with a score line of three goals to two. Congratulations to the team for bringing the first hurling trophy to St Brigid’s, and well done to Mr. Brady and the rest of the teaching staff in their efforts to promote hurling in the school. Well done also to All Saint’s club man, Conor Gallagher who was part of the St Joseph’s team.
St Louis Camogs Reach All Ireland Final
The camogs of St Louis Grammar School played in the final of the All Ireland Colleges’ B Final last Saturday against St Flannan’s of Ennis. St Flannan’s were dominant in the first half and built up a commanding lead. Unfortunately, despite a determined second half fight back, the Kintullagh girls could not claw back the lost ground and St Flannan’s picked up the silverware at the final whistle. St Louis can be proud of their achievement in reaching the final and they will learn from the experience and hopefully go one step further next year.

U10 Provincial Blitz
Well done to everyone who took part in the indoor blitz last Saturday at Meadowbank Arena in Magherafelt. Due to a few last minute withdrawals we were unable to field two teams as anticipated, so we divided the lads into two groups of four. Each group played alternate games with the goalkeeper for each game provided by a member from the other group. We handed responsibility for organising the teams over to the players, Ryan McGarrry and Cormac Magill were appointed captains. We were very impressed by how each group organised themselves, agreed positions and decided tactics. So successful was the combined result that both groups went through the competition unbeaten and All Saints finished top of their section.
(Team mentors have since collected their P45s and are currently negotiating redundancy packages).
Everyone played really well, for some such as Rory and Michael Kelly and Jordan Graffin this was their first taste of competitive hurling. We were delighted to see how well they played alongside more seasoned campaigners such as Calum McGarry, Conor O’Rawe and Ruairi McAllister.
The lads showed great sportsmanship and hurling nous, and this, combined with their exemplary behaviour off the pitch, made them great ambassadors for the club.
This was a mammoth event with one hundred and eight teams from each county in Ulster taking part. We would like to thank Ulster Hurling Council for organising the blitz and inviting All Saints to this hurling fleadh.

Coaching Events – Paudie Butler on Tour
Tipperary native and National Hurling Director, Paudie Butler, is presenting a series of coaching events over the next few days. Paudie is a charismatic character with an infectious enthusiasm and passion for hurling. Typically his sessions are action packed and focussed on developing skills via fun filled activities and drills. He is well worth going to see.
.
Hurling Fundamentals Session
The first of Paudie’s sessions is a Hurling Fundamentals session in the Parish Hall, Glenariffe on Thursday evening, 11th March. The session is indoors and targeted at coaches and parents involved with 7 – 12 year olds.
Wall Ball Session
Paudie is in Belfast on Friday 12th March at La Salle College, Edenmore Drive, where he will conduct a wall ball session from 7pm to 8pm.
Coach the Coaches
On Saturday 13th March Paudie will be one of the tutors at a “Coach the Coaches” course being held at Edmund Rice College, Glengormley. Dinny Cahill (current Antrim manager), Jim Nelson (ex Antrim manager) and John Crossey (ex Down manager) make up the remainder of an impressive line up of tutors for this course. There is a nominal fee of £5:00 to cover lunch and refreshments
If you’re interested in going to any of these events, phone Paddy (07708878968) or, contact Kieran Megraw (07918 719791); e-mail: kieran.megraw.ulster@gaa.ie
Hurling on You Tube
You can see Paudie Butler in action on You Tube on the following link:

This is an excellent video showing a typical wall ball session which we recommend all our young hurlers to watch. But make sure you get permission first! Many of the drills can be practised at home with a soft ball and a wall.
Sluggin Saints Fundraiser
Can a blow to the mid riff make a footballer hurl?
To find out, come along to “Sluggin Saints”.
This is a social event, for mums and dads, on Saturday 13th March at Slemish Park.
Two teams of finely tuned athletes will compete in a series of spoof boxing bouts using a normal size boxing ring, oversized gloves and undersized brains.
A “Slemish to Slemish” bus shuttle service will ferry patrons from the Slemish Bar to Slemish Park. Places are limited so please purchase your tickets in advance for this event to avoid disappointment. All proceeds will be used for club development, so please come along to what promises to be great night’s craic.
