Saints win Intermediate Football Championship
All Saints Ballymena won the Antrim Intermediate Football Championship for the second time in four years when they beat Portglenone in Sunday’s final in Creggan. In a rip-roaring game the Ballymena men came from two points down just minutes before half-time to run out winners in the end by five.
Going into the game most pundits had felt the Portglenone would prove too strong for the Saints, but boosted by a semi-final win over Aldergrove just five days earlier the Ballymena men upset the odds to clinch the title and book an Ulster quarter-final place against the Cavan champions on Sunday next.
The early exchanges produced some top class scores from both team, and they were level three times in the opening ten minutes, teenage corner-forward Peter McReynolds hitting two, and Michael McCarry one, for the Saints while Mark Graham (2) and Owen Doherty grabbed the Portglenone scores.
Portglenone, who had a stiff breeze at their backs, then began to get on top and Francis Cassidy and Owen Doherty edged them two points clear by the twenty-first minute with well worked points but Peter McAleer cut the gap to a single point again when he sent over a fine score from the left corner.
A Mark Graham point restored the two point cushion for Portglenone in the twenty fourth minute when he again burst through and split the uprights, but once more the Saints found a reply, this time from Michael McCarry who struck a great free from thirty-five metres against the breeze.
There then came a significant moment in the match when Portglenone’s rangy midfielder Niall McKeever, (who now plies his trade with the Melbourne Lions in the AFL but was available because his is home on holidays during the off-season in Australia), shot for goal from outside the twenty-metre line. The ball bounced awkwardly in front of Ballymena goalkeeper Brian Martin and he fumbled it, but as McKeever closed down on him Martin recovered well to clear the danger. Thirty seconds later the ball was in the net at the other end of the field as right-half forward Liam Cassley finished cleverly with the outside of his left foot and though Mark Graham hit back with his fourth point of the half within thirty seconds, Cassley’s goal was to be a telling blow.
All Saints took a firm grip on the game in the minutes after the restart as Michael McCarry, Peter McReynolds and Sean McVeigh all tagged on points to open a four point gap. It was fourteen minutes before Portglenone registered their first score of the second-half with a Gerard McAleese pointed free but Ballymena hit back with two cracking points from Damian Kelly and Sean McCambridge to leave them five ahead and coasting.
Francis Cassidy cut the gap to four again when he converted a free in the fifty-fifth minute but it was to be their last score of the game and Paddy Logan, who had a great second-half at midfield for the Saints, landed a great long range free in injury time to seal a well deserved win and spark scenes of celebration from the big Ballymena following.
ALL SAINTS - Brian Martin, Dara Walsh, Seamus McAfee, Kevin McAllister, Damian Kelly, Peter McNicholl, Emmet Killough, Sean McVeigh, Paddy Logan, Liam Cassley, Andy Kelly, Michael McCarry, Patrick McAleer, Sean McCambridge, Peter McReynolds.
PORTGLENONE – Brian McCann, Adiran McKeever, Tony Convery, Aiden McKee, Mark McAleese, Paddy Carey, Declan McErlean, Martin McCarry, Niall McKeever, Mark Graham, Francis Cassidy, Owen Doherty, Phelim McCloskey, Dermot McAleese, Gerard McAleese.

All Saints book final place
Antrim Intermediate Football Championship Semi Final:
All Saints 1-9 Aldergrove 0-5
All Saints advanced to the final of the Antrim Intermediate Football Championship with a fairly comfortable win over St. James Aldergrove at Casement Park on Wednesday night.
Wing-half back, Emmet Killough pointed to give them an early lead and Paddy McAleer put them in the driving seat with a goal in the 10th minute after good work by full-forward, Sean McCambridge.
Much controversy has surrounded this fixture in the weeks leading up to Wednesday’s game with Aldergrove having been dismissed from the competition after defeating Dunloy at the quarter-final stage for fielding an unregistered player.
Appeals to Ulster Council and finally to the RDA saw them reinstated eventually and fixed to meet All Saints in Wednesday night’s game but the appeal appeared to unsettle the Aldergrove men more than their opponents and they never really settled from the off.
The loss of mid-fielder Dan Troland with an early injury seemed to unsettle the St. James’ side further and they managed only one point during the opening 30 minutes from a Fergal Burke free in the 15th minute as they squandered good opportunities and managed to kick seven wides in the same period.
The Ballymena side were much more economical in their play with Sean McVeigh and Paddy Logan controlling the mid-field sector and points from Logan in the 20th minute and one from the industrious Michael McCarry in injury time, saw them lead 1-3 to 0-1 at the break.
Aldergrove needed a good start to the second half if they were to salvage anything from this game but in the event it was the Slemish Park side who continued to control the pace of the game and Michael ‘Gooch’ McCarry increased their lead with points in the 2nd and 4th minutes.
Aldergrove did pull one back through the boot of Fergal Burke but their best efforts were floundering on the rocks of a solid All Saints’ defence in which Seamus McAfee, Kevin McAllister, Peter McNicholl and Emmet Killough were outstanding.
Michael McCarry added a couple more points with Paddy Logan and Liam Cassley also getting their names on the scoresheet while Fergal Burke was to finish the game as Aldergrove’s only scorer, accounting for all five of their points.

All Saints lift Senior Feis Football Title
Hosts All Saints Ballymena won the Feis Cup Senior Football title when they beat Rasharkin by 2-12 to 0-9 in Saturday evening’s final at Slemish Park.
It was the perfect result for the Ballymena club who were hosting Feis na nGleann for the first time in its 107 year history. Most of the club’s energy and focus over the weekend may have been channelled into making sure the four day event went smoothly, but there was always one eye on the football final and this victory put the icing on the cake.
The home side got off to a dream start and were seven points to the good after just eight minutes thanks to a goal inside the first minute from centre-half forward Tiernan Walsh and four excellent points, three of which came from left-half forward Michael McCarry.
Rasharkin finally broke their scoring duck on 15 minutes when midfielder Benny Hasson pointed, but back came All Saints two minutes later when the evergreen Peter McCann rifled the ball high into the Rasharkin net to give his side a nine point lead.
Nine points to the good at the break the game was the Saints to lose though their were a few anxious moments in the second-half when Rasharkin hit back with three unanswered points, two from Brendan McMullan and one from Benny Hasson to cut the gap to five.
To their credit All Saints responded well to the mini crisis and Peter McCann calmed things down with a well taken point from play.
Rasharkin’s Brendan McMullan cut the gap back to five again but an All Saints flurry brought points from the excellent Michael McCarry, Paddy McAleer and Tiernan Walsh to seal and impressive victory.
All Saints : Paul McCann, Dara Walsh, Seamus McAfee, Ryan Lyness, Damian Kelly, Andy Kelly, Terry Logan, Paddy Logan, Peter McNicholl, Liam Cassley, Tiernan Walsh, Michael McCarry, Paddy McAleer, Sean McCambridge, Peter McCann.
