Young Saints Hurlers Make Club Proud

All Saints P2, P3 & P4 Hurlers
Recently our p2, p3 and p4 hurlers were invited to take part in a hurling blitz in Cushendall. This was the first time our youngest hurlers in the club had a chance to test themselves aginst children from other clubs. Our team got off to a very good start against Cushendun, with a one to nil victory, the goal scored by Maria O’Rawe. This turned out to be our only win of the day as we came up against some very good teams. All involved should be very proud of the effort displayed by this relatively young team. Well done to all.
Thanks to Roisin O’Boyle for compiling this report.
Thank-you from our Marathon Men
All Saints club members Barney McCann, Desy Metrustry and John McCann would like to thank all those who supported their fundraising efforts when they ran the Edinburgh marathon.
As Antrim and Tyrone were clashing in the Ulster Senior Football Championship, the three men were completing the gruelling 26 mile run round Edinburgh in the searing heat.
Pictured are the trio just before they headed to the start line.
The three men have currently raised just over £2,500 to be divided equally between the three charities: Macmillan Cancer Support, Breast cancer care and NI Hospices.
Of course, if anyone would still like to make a donation, they can do so by contacting them.
GREAT COMEBACK KEEPS SAINTS U-16s ON TOP
Thursday 17th June 2010
The Saints had to dig deep in the second half of this game to earn a point in Creggan. The lads showed real guts and determination to turn around a game they were losing by eight points with twelve minutes to go. This was typified by a full length dive on the goal line by Timmy “White Blur” Connelly to block a certain goal.
The game started with both sides trading scores, P Mc Aleer opening for the Saints with two points and a goal. A goal from J Gillan and a point from J Kelly kept the score level. Creggan then went on a point scoring stretch scoring five points in a row with no reply from Saints. At this point Saints were under pressure and giving away too many frees in front of the posts. C Loughran ended the first half scoring with an important goal to keep Saints in touch.
The score at half time Creggan 2-9 All Saints 3-3
Creggan stretched their lead in the second half and Saints were struggling to keep themselves in the game. Two points from a heavily marked P Mc Aleer were all Saints registered in the first ten minutes. The defence were working overtime to keep Creggan out with a couple of goal line clearances, and then goals from T Ferris and D Mc Nally changed the game. The team rallied and finished the stronger, another goal from T Ferris and the equaliser from J Kelly meant the points were shared.
This result was a credit to the team, when the pressure was on they kept it together against one of the main contenders for the Shield.
Final Score: All Saints 8-5 Creggan 5-14

U14s Make It Six Unbeaten
All Saints 3-11 Moneyglass 0-4
All Saints U14’s made it six games unbeaten after a good victory away to Moneyglass on Friday night. Niall McCarry opened the scoring in the second minute with a great point of the outside of his right foot. Minutes later Ciaran McLarnon found the top corner with a powerful shot and All Saints led by 4. Connell Lemon extended the lead with a point after a good run and when Owen O’Loughlin hit the net after a goal mouth scramble the lead was now 8.
Long range points from McLarnon and Lee Kirk meant that All Saints went in at the break with a scoreline of 2-5 to 0-2 without really dominating the game. They started the second half brightly and fired over a few quick points from Dunne, McLarnonn, Kirk and a great point of the left foot from Rory Kinney.
He should have hit the net a minute later but a great block from the full back kept the ball out. Eoin Campbell had been introduced at this stage and won his side a penalty when he looked like he would score. He took the responsibility himself and coolly slotted the ball into the corner of the net. Another point from McLarnon rounded off the scoring and gave him a personal tally of 1-5 from midfield.
This was a comfortable victory as the scoreline suggests and was achieved without really hitting top gear. They played some good football in patches but will have to play like this for the full game when facing tougher opposition in the games to come.
Well done boys.

Match Report – P5/P6 Blitz
Our P5 and P6 hurlers competed in a blitz in Randalstown last Sunday. Unfortunately a few teams failed to show up, but this did not detract from the lads’ enjoyment as they played St Enda’s and Tir na nÓg in a three way tie. They did very well, winning both their matches in convincing fashion.
These class based blitzes are an excellent idea as they allow children to play with their friends against a peer group of similar age and stature. All the boys grasped the opportunity to express themselves in an exhibition of free flowing hurling.
All Saints scored a total of 8:07 while conceding only 2:02 which is a fair indication of their dominance in all sectors. Cormac Magill, Conor O’Rawe and Ruairi Campbell were the P5 trio of the team. Each worked tirelessly throughout, Conor kept a clean slate during his stint in goals and his clearances were long and accurate. Cormac battled hard and won a lot of 50:50 balls and laid them on to his older team mates to convert into scores. Ruairi was unfortunate not to get a score or two. We encourage the lads to take chances and to learn from the outcomes. Ruairi was never scared to take a chance and gets the accolade for learning and improving most during the games.
The P6 contingent of Eamon Elliott, Ryan McGarry, Padhraig Magill, Cormac Lemon, Calum McGarry and Eoin Elliott, really stood up to the plate. They displayed all the skills from defensive blocking and hooking, strong clearances, astute passing, side line cuts and frees to points and goals galore. Ryan, Padhraig and Eoin formed a near impenetrable backline while initiating swift counter attacks when possession was regained. Each showed how versatile they are by scoring when they moved forward, (Ryan 1:01, Padhraig 1:00, Eoin 0:01). Eamonn Elliott and Cormac Lemon never stopped working at midfield; Cormac was rewarded with the opening goal of the day. Eamon bagged four points and was unfortunate not to add to this tally when a Joe Canning like sideline cut fell just short of the posts.
Calum McGarry had one of those Midas days where all his first touches turned to gold. He scored 5:01 using his trademark move of lifting the ball, turning on a sixpence to beat his marker and rifling a shot to the back of the net.
All in all a very enjoyable day, and a great confidence boost to the lads. Thanks to Tir na nÓg and St Enda’s for their sportsmanship and to Tir na nÓg for hosting the event.
Street League
At last Wednesday’s training we trialled a “Street League”. The idea is to promote competition amongst the P5 – Y9 squad by dividing them into three teams based on locality. The three areas are; Crebilly, Triangle (Broughshane Rd, Frys Rd, Cushendall Rd, catchment) and Town & Country. Each team played each other and based on the closeness of the contests we think that our exercise in gerrymandering has produced equitable teams and there should be little need for recourse or appeal to the ombudsman office.
The league is not intended to be taken too seriously, as such we hope to include a fun dimension in the form of an “It’s a Hurling Knockout”, where the teams will compete to perform skills – with a twist. Last Wednesday’s experiment ended with the Triangle and Town & Country teams sharing poll position while Crebilly revealed how adept they are at using their jokers.

ANOTHER BIG WIN FOR U16’s
Thursday 10th June 2010
U16 matches are starting to fall into a familiar pattern, slow starts and low scoring first halves followed by free scoring second halves. Moneyglass put up spirited performance in the first half restricting Saints to 1-4. A C Loughran point opened the scoring followed by a goal from J Kelly. Three further points, one from C Mc Larnon and a brace from P Mc Aleer completed the first half scores.
It was all change in the second half with Saints recording 14 scores from seven different players. They got a grip on the game straight from the throw in scoring often and regularly. The defence were rarely troubled and had no problems dealing with the Moneyglass attack.
Final Score: All Saints 6-13 Moneyglass 0-6
At the half way point in the season All Saints are leading the U16 Shield by two points from Creggan.

U16’s STAY ON TOP
Thursday 3rd June 2010
The match started in the same way as the previous one against Aghagallon, with a series of missed chances it took nearly ten minutes before J Kelly registered the first score with a point from close range. In a stop start first half the Saints just did enough to keep themselves in front with points from D Mc Nally, J Gillan, C Mc Larnon and a goal from J Kelly. The defence which had some positional changes for this game meanwhile restricted Tir Na Og to one point from play. The first half ended with All Saints leading by 5 points, 1-06 to 0-04.
In the second half All Saints went into a scoring blitz with some flowing moves to knock over nine points without reply. With that the team seemed to take their foot off the pedal and let Tir Na Og back into the game, conceding two break away goals in quick succession. Goals from J Kelly and a solo effort from P Mc Aleer steadied the ship and the Saints ran out winners by nine points.
A good solid performance, this win keeps All Saints in pole position in the league.
