Honours Even Against Glenshesk

The U12 league kicked off last Saturday when we hosted Glenshesk in a close fought match at Slemish Park. Leading 02: 00 to 1:02 at half time, the match ended in a draw with a final score: All Saints 3:02 Glenshesk 2: 05.

Ciarán Neeson produced a man of the match performance in goals. He made a number of crucial saves and his long range puck outs reached deep into the Glenshesk half of the field, turning defence into attack in an instant. The defensive lines were solid; Conor McCormick controlled full back while Padhraig Magill found a niche for himself at corner back. Calum and Ryan McGarry put in good performances at half back, linking with the midfield pairing of Eoin McGuigan and Eamon Elliott who worked well together. Eoin’s relentless grafting complimented Eamon’s guile and ability to slip his marker to pick up loose ball. Up front, Ronan Ward led by example, while Patrick O’Hara, James Murphy and Cormac Magill were a constant threat and Ryan McKenna, on his debut put on an impressive display. Conor Cosgrove and Sean and Conor O’Rawe were delayed with other sporting commitments, (good athletes are always in demand), but played well when they came on in the second half.

All Saints led by a point at half time and could have gone on to win but they lost their shape for a while in the second half and allowed Glenshesk to come back. This taught the lads the importance of holding their position, staying focussed and closing down opponents quickly.

This was an enjoyable game and a great boost to the lads whose confidence was dented somewhat after losing to Cushendall in a challenge match the week before. They can take a lot of positives from their display including some timely tackles, the pick of which was a block made at full stretch by Conor Cosgrove late in the game to deny Glenshesk a winning point.

Thanks to Glenshesk for a very sporting encounter and to Owen Elliott for refereeing the match and letting the game flow. Readers of the Irish News should note that Paddy Heaney’s views were directed at football referees, the reputation our own inter county referee remains unsullied!

Club – School Coaching Initiative

Over the past two school terms, Ulster Council sponsored a scheme which delivered hurling coaching in the local primary schools. The benefits and importance of strong links between the schools and the club is well recognised. Following discussions with Ulster Council, and in partnership with St Colmcille’s and St Brigid’s we have brokered additional coaching for the schools.

PJ O’Mullan, ex goal keeper and current senior manager of Loughguille Shamrocks, will coach P5 and P6 pupils. He will follow up the school sessions by working along with club coaches at Wednesday night training. PJ is an excellent coach with a wealth of experience coaching at underage and senior level. He is no stranger to Slemish Park as he played juvenile football for All Saints up to minor. He visited the club last week to meet the coaches and players and took an action packed session where he emphasised the importance of concentration, performing skills and drills at pace and playing with commitment. The lads enjoyed the session and learned a lot, we were delighted with the way they listened and responded to his tuition.

The programme continues for the next few weeks. We encourage all players to make a special effort to attend training and make the most of this opportunity. Newcomers are particularly welcome, so if you have a friend who does not currently play hurling this is an ideal time to encourage him to start. We are confident that this pilot scheme will be successful and will be expanded in future years.

We would like to thank Mr McKenna and Mr Brady, the principals of St Colmcille’s and St Brigid’s, for their continuous promotion of gaelic games and to Kieran Megraw, Antrim Hurling Director, for organising the scheme.

If you want to know more about the programme or have any question about underage hurling contact Paddy – 07708878968.

BACK TO WINNING WAYS FOR U16’s

Thursday 13th May 2010

After the previous weeks Breslin Cup exit to Cargin, the U16’s got back on the winning trail with a good performance against Lisburn at Slemish Pk. The team was missing a few regulars due to injury and suspension so had to draft in L Kirk and A O’Connell from the U14 squad.  Lisburn got off to a better start quickly going three points up but after a couple of positional changes All Saints got back on level terms with points from D Mc Nally and J Gillan. All Saints took the lead with a goal midway through the first half,   this was the result of a great team effort and a good finish from T Ferris.  Points from D Mc Nally, T Ferris and C Loughran meant that All Saints traded scores with Lisburn up to the end of the half which ended 1-06 to 1-06.

The team’s effort at training started to kick in during the second half and they started to pull away from Lisburn, points from C Loughran, and T Ferris followed by a fisted goal from C Loughran gained the lead for the Saints. A great penalty save from D Little stopped a Lisburn comeback in its tracks, the defence backed this up with a tight second half performance which restricted Lisburn to only three points.   Saints never lost the lead and further scores from P Mc Aleer, D Mc Nally and T Ferris saw them finish well ahead by six points.

Overall a good team performance against one of the stronger teams in the league.

Final Score:  All Saints 2-12 Lisburn 1-9

Squad

D Little, O Bradley, P Killough, C Neeson, D Mc Kee, P Mc Aleer, D Mc Nally, J Gillan, T Ferris , Ciaron Mc Larnon, A Esler, D Crawford, C Loughran, A O’Connell, L Kirk

All Saints Results & Statistics From International Sevens Victory

Group Stages
All Saints 0-7 Round Towers 0-3
The lads had a slow start and where 0-2 to 0-1 behind at half time. Upped the pace in the second half with Micky McCarry and Paddy Logan dominating around the middle to win by four points
Scorers M McCarry 0-3, P Logan 0-3, Peter McCann 0-1
All Saints 3-6 St Brendans 1-3
The lads dominated this one throughout and should’ve won easier. Micky McCarry was the best player and kicked five points from midfield. Keeper Paul McCann even managed a full length of the pitch run to score an excellent goal.
Scorers M McCarry 0-5, P McCann 1-0, Peter McCann 1-0, L Cassley 1-0, D Kelly 0-1
All Saints 3-8 North London Shamrocks 2-4
They made hard work of this and with just a couple of minutes left the shamrocks had reduced the deficit to three before four late points put a comfortable look on it. For the third game in a row Micky McCarry had a fine game, with good support from Liam Cassley and Paddy Logan
Scorers M McCarry 1-2, Peter McCann 1-1, L Cassley 1-1, P Logan 0-2, S McAfee 0-1, B Logan 0-1
All Saints Qualified as group winners and drawn to play Round Towers, whom they had already met in the group stages, in the quarter finals.
QF: All Saints 4-6 Round Towers 1-2
An excellent display from Liam Cassley and a hat-trick of goals ensured a comfortable passage through to the semi finals. All Saints dominated throughout this match and where much to strong for their opponents. Peter McCann, Damian Kelly and Paddy Logan all performed well.
Scorers L Cassley 3-1, Peter McCann 1-1, B Logan 0-1, K McAllister 0-1, D Kelly 0-1, M McCarry 0-1
SF: All Saints 2-8 Tir Chonnail Gaels 0-10 (After Extra Time)
This was very much a game of two halves with the Saints failing to register a single score in the first half. A mix up between Liam Cassley and Micky McCarry let the Gaels of the hook early in the first half before they dominated the remainder of the half scoring six excellent points. All Saints upped the pace after the break and three early points from Micy McCarry, Paddy Logan and McCarry again closed the gap before All Saints where awarded a penalty. Peter McCann took the spotkick and levelled the game. The sides exchanged points and the game finished level. The Gaels where the better side in the first half of extra time and it took a late Liam Cassley goal and Peter McCann point to put the Saints into the final.
Final: All Saints 1-11 Heston Gaels 1-5
An excellent start ensured a comfortable final victory. Barney Logan kicked over a couple of points from distance before Peter McCann began to dominate. He scored 1-4 of the All Saints total in a superb display which earned him the player of the tournament award for the second time. This was a deserved award for Bugsy although he faced stiff competition from Liam Cassley, Micky McCarry and Shimmy McAfee

Saints wins Tir Chonaill Gaels 7s Again

All Saints from Ballymena (Antrim) successfully defended their title by winning the 9th Tir Chonaill Gaels International 7s tournament for the second time. In what has now become the biggest and most successful 7s tournament in Britain with twenty seven teams competing in both a men’s and women’s competitions. All Saints along with Stars of Erin (Dublin) and Clann Eireann (Armagh) travelled from Ireland to compete along with Roger Casements (Coventry) and twelve other London teams to make up the men’s tournament.

The men’s competition started exactly at 12pm with military precision. The first shock off the day came when Heston Gaels beat Tir Chonaill Gaels in one of the opening games. However as the day progressed this turned out to be no shock. Heston topped their group by winning all three group games. Other teams that qualified to the quarter final stages were All Saints, Parnell’s, TCG, Stars of Erin, Fulham Irish, St Kiernan’s and Round Towers. After extra time it took penalties to sort out the Fulham Irish and St Kiernan’s game, with Fulham Irish going through in sudden death to the semis.
Fulham played Heston in one semi and TCG played All Saints in the other. Heston continued the day with another good win against Fulham in the semi to progress to the final for the first time. All Saints overcame TCG but not without playing an extra ten minutes of extra time.

Unfortunately, for Heston the day was long and the tank was getting empty, as All Saints with their vast experience of playing in this tournament for the eight time, won comfortably.
Congratulations to Peter McCann who also picked up the player of the tournament award.

The women’s tournament was just as competitive as the men’s with a record eleven team’s participating. The Parnell’s overcame a very strong St Mary’s University team to win the senior trophy. Other teams participating in the women’s included Tara’s, John Mitchell’s, Cambridge University, Fulham Irish, Clonbony, Dulwich Harps, Claddagh Gaels and Roger Casements.

Stevie Keane (PRO for Tir Chonaill Gaels) wants to thank all clubs for taking part, especially those from outside of London. This tournament is run and organised by the Tir Chonaill Gaels club, however, we could not do this without the support of the London County boards (Men and Women) all London clubs and all Gaels within London. We also thank all our sponsors in supporting this great event and already we are looking forward to next year’s event.

Feile Uladh 2010

The full back line in the famous Tipperary team of the 1960’s was renowned for their resolute defence. In an era before the plague of celebrity chefs and reality TV, the area around the Tipperary goal mouth was known as “Hell’s Kitchen”.

The kitchen reopened under new ownership last Saturday, and the cookers were reignited as our young hurlers faced up to a series of challenges from bigger and stronger teams in the Ulster Feile. This U14 competition was a baptism of fire for the boys, all of whom are eligible to play U14 again next year and thirteen of whom are still U12. While initially awestruck by their looming opponents they composed themselves and stood up to repel the onslaught. The captaincy was rotated amongst the more senior players, Luke O’Rawe, Anthony McGuigan, Terence Diamond and Jack McCann. Each showed real leadership by providing support and encouragement to their younger team mates. While beaten in all their games the lads showed great spirit throughout, making the opposition work hard for every score. The tackling was high octane and some of the hooking and blocking was top calibre.

All Saints took the plaudits for the best score of the afternoon; a long puck out from Ciarán Neeson in goal found Terence Diamond wide on the wing at midfield, Terence caught the ball and gave a crisp diagonal pass into Anthony McGuigan who had eluded his marker. Anthony ran on to the ball picked it first time and slotted it over the bar. Simple and direct – hurling at its best.

The lads learned a lot from the event and each received a sliotar in acknowledgement of their efforts.

Originally the Feile was to be held at Slaughtneil, however plans changed at the eleventh hour and All Saints were asked to host the event. We would like to thank:

  • Everyone who helped out with preparing pitches, organising teams, stewarding, providing hospitality and clearing up afterwards. Your help is greatly appreciated.
  • Ulster Council for organising the event and to Jimmy Darragh, venue coordinator.
  • Gareth Brown and Colm Cunning for refereeing the matches.
  • The players and mentors of Gort na Móna, St Mary’s Rasharkin, Buncrana and Na Magha Derry for their competitive sportsmanship.
  • O’Neill’s Sportswear for sponsoring sliotars.
  • Parents and members who came along to support the team.
  • Our young hurlers for their effort, sportsmanship and exemplary behaviour throughout the day. As always, they were great ambassadors for the club, welcoming hosts to the visiting teams and a credit to their families.

Juvenile Hurling Training Times

Wednesday nights at Slemish Park.

P2 –P4 – 06:30 – 07:45

P5 – Y9 -06:30 – 08:00

P2 – P4 children should bring trainers as training will move inside to the hall if the weather is inclement.

Lá na gClub

Along with every GAA club in the country All Saints will celebrate Lá na gClub (Club Day) on Sunday 09th May. A series of events will be held throughout the day to celebrate the GAA in the community. The theme is promotion of “Youth Through Volunteerism”. Plans for the day are not complete but we encourage everyone to buy into the theme and volunteer your support in whatever way you can. A juvenile meeting to arrange events will be held on Thursday 08th July at St Brigid’s primary school at 7pm.

 Suggestions for hurling include:

Parish League

P5 – Y9 hurlers will be divided into three teams, eight or nine a side, according to town land. The teams will play each other in a round robin league. Matches will last for 15 minutes (7.5 minutes each half). If level at full time the winner will be decided by a “golden score”. Total running time – 1 hour.

 Road to Croker

A mini All Ireland for P1 – P4 hurlers. Six teams of three or four a side, will play on three pitches named, Croke Park, Casement Park and Slemish Park. There will be three sets of games – quarter finals, semi finals and finals. After each quarter and semi final the winners move towards Croke Park, losers move towards Slemsih Park, (in the event of a draw the team that scores first moves up). At the end of two games the two top ranking teams will find themselves at Croke Park, two middle ranks will be at Casement and the third ranking teams will be at Slemish Park. The three finals are therefore played between teams of comparable standard.

Running time – Quarter and Semi Finals, 7 – 8 minutes straight through.

Finals – 15 minutes with half time (7.5 minutes per half)

Total running time – 45 minutes.

Once finalised the schedule for the day will be posted on the club website:

CLOSE BUT NOT CLOSE ENOUGH FOR U16’s IN CARGIN

Match Three of the season saw the Saints away to Cargin. As in the previous game Saints started strongly, stretching ahead of Cargin with well taken points from J Gillan, J Kelly, T Ferris, C Campion, D Mc Nally and P Mc Aleer.  The newly re-laid pitch seemed to suit All Saints as they put some good passing moves together and maintained their lead throughout the first half.  However sloppy defending in the final minutes of the first half let Cargin in for a goal and a point which gave them incentive for the second half.   Half time score All Saints 0-8 Cargin 1-3.

Saints got off to a poor start in the second half letting Cargin in for two quick goals which changed the game completely, Cargin going ahead for the first time.  Cargin then went further ahead with another goal and a point. Saints finally got off the mark with a point from P Mc Aleer, this seemed to spark the comeback from the rest of the team. Goals from J Kelly, P Mc Aleer and D Mc Nally backed up with points from D Mc Kee, P Mc Aleer, J Gillan and J Kelly kept All Saints in the game but they could never get ahead of Cargin. Cargin finished the game with two goals to win by four points.

All Saints should take heart from this performance, except for a short spell at the start of the second half; they competed as equals with Cargin at their home pitch.

Final Score:  All Saints 3-12 Cargin 6-7
