All Saints Club Members have sights set on Edinburgh Finish Line

All Saints GAC Club members Barney McCann, Desy Metrustry and John McCann are running the 2010 Edinburgh Marathon on Sunday 23rd May.

The lads have put in a lot of hard training over the past few months and we should all support them as they aim to complete this personal challenge as well as raising funds for their notable chosen charities … Cancer Support, Breast Cancer Care and NI Hospice.

If anyone would like to make a donation, please contact any of the 3 lads, or any Club Committee Members.

We would also encourage that team mentors print off the attached sponsor sheet and bring to training sessions / matches.

Back To Back Wins for U-16s

All Saints followed up their win against Ballycastle last week, edging out Creggan by a point in a closely fought match at Slemish Pk. Saints started very strongly with T Ferris opening the scoring with a well taken goal. This was quickly followed by long range points from D Mc Nally and J Kelly. All Saints had most of the possession in the first half and they combined strong running with accurate passing, further goals from D Mussen and C Mc Larnon and good points from distance by P Mc Aleer and D Mc Kee saw Saints leading at half time 3-6 to 0-7.

This was the classic “game of two halves”, Creggan came out fighting in the second half and it was the turn of the All Saints defence to feel the pressure.  Creggan were scoring points but the defence, combined with some great saves by D Little, managed to restrict them to one goal which proved decisive in the end. At the other end points from J Kelly, T Ferris and D Mc Nally kept All Saints ahead. The game was in the balance right up to the last seconds and it was a relieved team that watched T Connolly clear the ball from Creggan’s last attack. Final score was All Saints 3-10 Creggan 1-15.

School Scene

Local primary schools, St Brigid’s and St Colmcille’s, competed in a Cumannn na mBunscol 7 a side hurling blitz last Thursday. Both teams did very well and reached the semi final stages of the competition. They were pipped at the penultimate hurdle by St Joseph’s Crumlin and Creggan respectively. However, All Saints were represented in the final by Conor Gallagher who lined out for St Joseph’s.

Congratulations to everyone involved on a great performance which is just reward for the hard work being done promoting hurling in the primary schools. We are delighted to support the schools in any way we can and we look forward with confidence to the near future when St Brigid’s and St Colmcille’s hurlers will meet in a hurling final.

U12 Footballers at Croke Park

Congratulations to our U12 footballers who played at Croke Park on Easter Tuesday. A biblical rain shower baptised the lads as they ran onto the hallowed turf amid the cheers of the travelling supporters. Everyone put in a massive performance during two exciting games in which the lads drew with St Brigid’s and shaded a close encounter with St Jame’s Aldergrove with a couple of points to spare.

Unfortunately Dáire Hasson came off injured after shipping a crunching tackle in the first game. He was taken to hospital where it was confirmed that he had broken his collar bone. Following expert care by staff at St John’s Ambulance and Temple Street Hospital he was discharged in time to meet up with the rest of his team mates for a celebratory burger at McDonalds.

His injury is a double blow for All Saints as Dáire is a dual star in both football and hurling. However, apart from the fracture, his X-ray revealed that Dáire has GAA DNA in his bones, so we are sure that he will be back playing soon and we join all his team mates in wishing him a speedy recovery.

Antrim secure promotion, NFL Final in Croke Park

Allianz National Football League Division 3
Wexford 1-11 Antrim 0-12

The final league game for Antrim today, in Division Three, was in effect an end to end battle from start to finish. On the day Wexford were well fired up and determined to fight to the bitter end; knowing at outset that they had an almost impossible and uphill battle, but odds notwithstanding never giving up the struggle for promotion.

Wexford were impressive on many occasions and their corner forward, Ciaran Lyng, in particular, was on target again and again. Wexford were at home and hungry; they got the rub of the green on the day, off to a flying start with a superb early goal and yet only in the dying minutes did they emerge with a two point margin, in a very competitive and closely contested battle.

No less than seven members of the Antrim team managed to get their names on the scoreboard, which demonstrates cohesive effort. However, Antrim had repeating opportunity but in turn failed to take advantage of a strong breeze in the first half and again, but for the keepers head, could have had a great goal in the second half. Six first half wides were just a few too many and arguably thereby, a chance was lost. Antrim were a point down at half time and had to contend with a storming and determined Wexford team, with the wind in their backs in the second half; it is to their credit that once again little quarter was given by the Antrim defence.

Wexford appeared to perhaps win just a few too many frees in front of goal and around the 14 to 20 metre area; an astute observer could not have failed to notice some real evidence of tactical play, on the part of some Wexford players. Others might suggest that this is all part of the game and it is up to the referee in the final analysis, to adjudicate on the balance of play. In any event Wexford really stepped up to the mark, however difficult to accept; they forced the pace and kept up their work rate, doing enough to win. It would be unfair to suggest that they did not deserve to win on this vigorous performance.

All that said and done, 2010 has seen another remarkable league performance from Antrim Senior Footballers. Back to back promotion does not come easily nor from any streak of good luck; Antrim are League leaders of Division 3 on merit and as of right. The League final, in two weeks time, holds a lot of promise and a double header with Down / Armagh, is surely worthy and deserving of a great day out in Croke Park. For so many good reasons it would again do a power of good for GAA in Ulster, a Province that has unquestionably made a huge contribution to the success of Gaelic games in the last decade.

Antrim scorers: P. Cunningham 0-4[3 frees], Michael Mc Cann 0-2, Brendan Herron 0-2, Terry O’Neill 0-1, James Loughrey 0-1, Gerard O’ Boyle 0-1, Tomás Mc Cann 0-1.

The Division 3 NFL Final has been fixed for 7.00pm at Croke Park on Saturday 24th April. It will be part of a double header with Limerick v Waterford in the Division 4 decider at 5.00pm.

The following day, also at Croke Park, the Division 1 and 2 finals will take place as Cork play Mayo and Armagh face Down.

All Saints Play For First Time At Croke Park

Tuesday 6th of April will go down as an historic occasion for the All Saints Club. A team of U.12 footballers were led onto the Croke Park pitch by mentors Martin Campbell and John Hasson at exactly 11.03 a.m. It was thrilling to see John and Martin put the players through an intensive warm up which definitely prepared the boys for the matches that they played against St. Bridgets, Belfast and St. James Aldergrove. Both matches were played in a great spirit, unfortunately Dara Hasson “shipped” a hard tackle and broke his collar bone in two places-Thanks must go to the St. Johns Ambulance who looked after Dara and took him to University Childrens Hospital, Temple Street (under flashing lights) and ensured that he received the best possible treatment. All the boys played very well and showed that All Saints have nothing to fear from any club in Ulster. Hopefully this is the first of many visits to headquarters and the cheer that went up in the crowd everytime that All Saints scored sent a chill up my spine. Thanks to every one involved.
