Fógra – Juvenile Hurling – 23-12-10
Na Naomh Uile – Iománaíocht na n-Óg
(All Saints – Juvenile Hurling)
2010
2010 was a busy year for our young hurlers. Since January we held almost sixty training sessions, including a number of “master classes” given by Ulster Council coaches PJ O’Mullan and Dominic McKinley.
The various teams played twenty eight matches and blitzes. We entered seven tournaments of which we reached the final of four and won two. Along the way the players gained rich experiences in the highs and the lows, and the thrills and the spills of competitive hurling.
We were very proud of how the boys conducted themselves throughout the year. They were always well behaved, magnanimous when they won and gracious when beaten. Most important of all they enjoyed their hurling and wanted to play. They are a great bunch, a pleasure to work with, and a credit to the club and their families.
Christmas Break
There will be no training next week. Training will resume for U12s and U14s on Wednesday 05th January at St Louis Grammar School: 06:30 – 08:00
Indoor League
The North Antrim Indoor Hurling League starts on Saturday 08th January. Over the past few years All Saints have done well in this competition. Last year our U12s won the Div 4 title and our U10s qualified for Division 2 where they finished third, just missing out on a place in the final by one point. The current squads have been training hard over the winter and the lads are looking forward to the tournament.

What Do You Want For Christmas?
Square Ball is a clothing company that produces tee-shirts with a GAA theme. One of their lines is entitled “Evolution” which depicts the stages of human development from ape like origins, through various troglodyte and Neanderthal ancestors to modern man. The final figure in the sequence is the pinnacle of the species – a hurler in full flight.
Kipling, in his poem “If” described what he considered were the virtues of a man, and during the summer his thoughts were recited by Sean Boylan in GAA promotional advertisements on RTE television. Sean and Rudyard did a decent enough job, however, neither was able to capture that special something that defines a hurler.
Hurlers possess a wide range of attributes and skills and while some may master these better than others the essential trade mark that they all have in common is desire. Quite simply, a hurler wants to hurl.
What a Hurler Wants
To be hard as steel, yet supple as rope,
To face opposition and be able to cope.
To play on a team with individual flair,
To chase like a greyhound and run like a hare.
To be fired with passion while keeping your cool,
To go mad for the ball without seeming a fool.
To have the presence and vision to open the door,
To pass to a team mate and relish his score.
To practice each day, with ball against wall,
To master the skills, for all to enthral.
To try your best in every challenge you meet,
To celebrate success and learn from defeat.
To enjoy every puck, every catch, every clash.
To have pride in yourself, your parish, your ash.
Merry Christmas
We wish all our juveniles and their families a Merry Christmas. We hope Santa is good and that you eat plenty of turkey and sweets so that you will have loads of energy to burn off in the new season.
Nollaig Shona agus Athbhliain Faoi Mhaise Daoibh.

Urgent Notice – Regarding Membership Details
A Chara,
We are writing to advise you that Servasport Ltd., has informed the GAA that there has been unauthorised access to the GAA membership database.
Servasport Ltd., a Belfast based company that develops and maintains the GAA membership database, has issued an unreserved apology to the GAA and to our members.
The GAA became aware of the data breach when it was informed on the 19th November 2010 that disks containing the database had been received by the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner and the GPA, who immediately passed the disk to the GAA. The Information Commissioners Office in Belfast also received a disk.
An investigation is being carried out by the Police Service of Northern Ireland and in order to facilitate this investigation the GAA has been unable to inform members until today.
The database contains names and addresses of 501,786 members.
In relation to these members the database holds:
- 288,511 dates of birth
- 107,212 mobile numbers
- 63,695 landline numbers
- 30,171 email addresses
In the case of 544 members, the database contains a reference to a medical condition and the GAA is writing directly to each of these members setting out the information recorded about them.
167,157 of the members on the database are under 18 years of age. It is GAA policy that mobile phone or email details of persons under 18 years of age should not be stored on any database. The policy states that any such communication should be via the mobile phone or email address of their parent or guardian.
No other GAA IT system is affected by this incident. The database does not contain financial or any other information.
This matter is being taken very seriously by the GAA:
- The GAA is working closely with the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner, the Information Commissioners Office and the Police Service of Northern Ireland
- Deloitte has been engaged to undertake an independent review of Servasport and other suppliers of IT to the GAA
- All clubs have been sent this email
- The GAA has set up an Information Line
Any member or any parent/guardian with any questions, or who wishes to establish whether data relating to them has been affected by this incident, should contact the Information Line on Lo Call Number : 1890 987 807 or 0800 0114787(from Six Counties) 8am to 8pm daily.
The compilation of the GAA database is the result of enormous effort by our volunteers across the country. The GAA greatly regrets that this incident has occurred. We would ask for your help by informing your members of the contents of this email.

North Antrim U11 Airborne Blitz
Our U11s travelled to Dunloy on Saturday to take part in an indoor “Airborne” tournament. Airborne is a modified indoor game designed to promote catching and striking skills. A single point is awarded for any score (goal or point), while two points are awarded for a catch. For example a player who catches a ball from a puck out or a stick pass, strikes the ball over the bar and catches the rebound would score a nexus of 7 points (2 + 1 + 2). Play is non stop so there is no time to stand around and admire the scenery. Apart from catching, the game provides players with loads of opportunities to practice tackling skills; hustling bustling, hooking and blocking as well as striking and passing. Players need to concentrate and stay alert at all times and choose their options well, any “Hail Mary” shots or puck outs are likely to be punished by the opposition gaining possession. Likewise anyone who takes their eye off the game with OTT soccer style theatrics is likely to end up with egg on his face as the opposition take advantage by playing on and racking up a few scores.
In summary this game provides youngsters fantastic opportunities to develop skills and promote a positive attitude in a competitive arena.
So How Did We Do?
We played Cushendall, Glenshesk, Dunloy and Larne. In each game we scored more points and goals than the opposition; however we lost to Cushendall and drew with Glenshesk because they got more clean catches.
This game was new to the lads and cuteness came with experience. It wasn’t until the last game against Larne that they started to put their hands up and contest ball in the air to gain some big scores. Nonetheless, we were very impressed by their commitment, tackling, lifting and striking. Particularly pleasing was their confidence and desire to take scores.

Paudie Butler Coaching Workshop
Earlier this month a group of coaches attended a coaching workshop in Dunloy, presented by National Hurling Coaching Director, Paudie Butler. This was an excellent session with Paudie dispensing coaching nuggets with zeal to an attentive audience that would make a Broadway evangelist green with envy. In particular he preached the importance of;
- Grip and Swing – proper body alignment when striking the ball (feet properly placed, knees bent, back straight, and hips and shoulders in line with the target). Dominant hand at the top of the hurl.
- Concentration and intensity of effort. – doing everything at pace to mimic a match situation.
- Attacking the ball with conviction and taking route one to goal.
You can get a flavour of what was covered in the workshop by logging onto the following video on You Tube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aGF9aVO4OO8

Magill Brothers are Martial Art Experts
Ju-Jitsu, the Japanese art of self defence translates to “The Gentle Art”. The sport involves the use of various implements such as wooden swords (boken), staffs (bo), rice flails (nunchaku) and batons (tonfa).
Two of our young players, Padhraig and Cormac Magill, are accomplished exponents of the sport. Both boys are black belts; indeed Cormac is the youngest person in Ireland to achieve this grade. They recently surpassed this achievement when they were awarded additional “gold tabs” to their belts. Cormac won his first tab while Padhraig’s belt is glistening brightly after earning his third gold tab.
Although the ancient Japanese had little opportunity to play hurling the two lads have shown how the principles of self defence can be transferred onto the hurling field by their fearless defensive and tackling skills. Their dad, Liam, teaches Ju-Jitsu and has offered to show our young hurlers some techniques which may be applicable during matches.
