Juvenile Hurling Development Meeting

Thank you to everyone who came along to the juvenile hurling development meeting last Thursday. The following are the main action points that arose.

Winter Training Programme

Wednesday 30th September will be the last outdoor evening training session for this year. Training will switch to Sunday mornings (11:30 – 13:00), starting this Sunday 04th October, as long as the mild weather persists. When outdoor training finishes we will take a break for a few weeks before moving indoors.

Exact dates to be decided.

Age Groups

Training will be for school children in P2 to Y9. Unfortunately we are unable to cater for children in P1.

Parent Coaching Course

We will run an informal coaching session for parents prior to the start of indoor training. The idea is to teach parents some basic hurling skills so that they will feel confident to practise with their children at home and to help out at training sessions if they wish.

Foundation Level Coaching and Child Protection Courses

Child ProtectionFriday 16th October: 7pm – 10pm; Tutor, Ciaran O’Neill

Foundation Hurling – Saturday 24th October: 10am – 5pm; Tutor, Kieran Megraw.

These courses are scheduled to be held at Slemish Park. You must attend the child protection course if you wish to do the foundation coaching course. If you are interested please tell one of the coaches.

POCVA Checks

Anyone involved in coaching children needs to be checked under Prevention of Children and Vulnerable Adults legislation (POCVA). Completed forms should be returned before 06th October 2009.

Certificates of Achievement

The possibility of awarding a certificate or medal to children who attend hurling was discussed.

A number of years ago we awarded achievement certificates to children who had shown competence in various hurling skills. The idea was to recognise children that were able to perform a certain set of skills; there would be a series of awards, set at achievable but increasingly challenging levels, similar to the coloured belt system used in martial arts or merit system in swimming. We are considering reintroducing this scheme which, apart from recognising the children’s efforts, will hopefully encourage them to improve their skills by practising at home.

Match Report – All Saints v Glenarm

Our U12s travelled to Feystown on Sunday morning to play Glenarm in the last league match of the season. Prior to the match, as a team building exercise, the management organised a magical mystery tour across the back roads of the Antrim Plateau. (If anyone is interested in buying a dodgy Sat Nav – contact Paddy).

The bonding initiative was a resounding success, as the lads went on to produce one of the best displays of the year.

Daire Hasson and Conor Gallagher shared goal keeping responsibilities. Both pulled off some fine saves and their astute puck outs were the platform for many attacks. Luke O’Rawe, Anthony McGuigan and Joseph McCann made up a mean full back line stopping opposition forwards in their tracks and repulsing attacks. The half back and midfield quintet were very effective, interchanging positions and covering for each other. Calum McGarry was like a young tiger and a constant bane to the opposition forwards. Conor McCormick produced a man of the match performance with his incisive tackling, ball winning ability and trade mark surging bursts from defence. Ciarán Neeson’s blocking and hooking was decisive whilst his attacking forays resulted in a number of fine scores including an incredible tight angled point from the thirteen meter sideline. Ryan McGarry and Conor Gallagher were relentless at midfield with their constant running, closing down of opponents and intelligent distribution of the ball. Up front Ronan Ward, Cormac Lemon, and Eoin McGuigan battled hard and were the first line of defence when possession was lost. Sean and Conor O’Rawe made up a dangerous full forward line. Each was unfortunate not to score a goal or two; being denied on the line by a resilient Glenarm defence on a number of occasions.

As stated before, this squad is very young. All bar two players are eligible to play U12 again next year and over half the squad are still U10. Their performance was all the more remarkable considering that six of the team had spent the previous day playing in the Go Games football finals at Crumlin and were shattered from their exertions.

Honest players will always give their best, and performance and attitude are much more important than score lines. We are proud to say that the lads excelled themselves in all these areas on Sunday and throughout the league campaign.

To coin a phrase from Galway football manager and RTE pundit John O’Mahony; “they are in good place” going into next season.

Score; All Saints 2:02; Glenarm 05:03

Claire & Bridget win All-Ireland Medals with Antrim Ladies

ladies-jfc-final-2009-antrim.jpgIt was certainly a weekend to remember for Claire Timoney and Bridget Scullion as they guided Antrim to victory in the All-Ireland Ladies Junior Football Championship Final at Croke Park.

Claire was in fine form, top-scoring with 1-05 of her team’s 3-10 total, and Bridget kept the Saffron defence in tact.

Claire & Bridget have both previously played for Ballymena but now play their Club football at other Clubs as Ballymena Ladies are no longer competing, but certainly all at All Saints congratulate both ladies on this fantastic achievement.

TG4 All-Ireland Ladies Junior Football Championship Final:
Antrim 3-10  Limerick 2-08

Two goals by wing-forward Mairead Cooper proved decisive as Antrim were crowned TG4 All-Ireland ladies junior football champions at Croke Park on Sunday.

Last year’s beaten semi-finalists emerged five-point winners against Limerick to secure a place in the 2010 intermediate championship.

The Saffrons had drawn with Limerick in the group stages of the competition but the West County cup will reside in Ulster for the first time since Armagh’s victory in 2005.

Impressive full-forward Claire Timoney was Antrim’s star turn in the first half, collecting 1-3 as the winners established a 2-6 to 1-4 interval lead.

It was a game littered with goal chances and while Limerick raised the first green flag after ten minutes, Antrim were more clinical with the possession that came their way in attack.

Limerick’s top scorer Dymphna O’Brien took advantage of a mistake by Antrim goalkeeper Ciara McCoy to tap home but Cooper replied in kind seven minutes later.

Eight minutes before the break, Creggan Kickhams player Eimear Kelly placed Timoney for Antrim’s second goal and they went on to lead by five points at the break.

Limerick opened the second half in blistering fashion and after Yvette Moynihan pointed, Louise Higgins bagged a superb solo goal in the 35th minute to haul the Shannonsiders back into contention.

Higgins escaped the attentions of a number of defenders, dummied McCoy and stroked the ball into the far corner as Limerick moved to within a point of their opponents, 2-6 to 2-5.

Antrim, appearing in their very first All-Ireland final, spurned another goal chance in the 43rd minute when sub Aimee McAtamney shot straight at Ella O’Shaughnessy but the Ulster outfit remained comfortable nonetheless.

With six minutes remaining, sub Leanne Higgins brought Limerick to within two points, 2-10 to 2-8, but Cooper raised clear three minutes later to net her second goal and put real daylight between the teams.

Cooper was denied a hat-trick in the final minute when her rasping drive struck the crossbar and rebounded to safety but by then, victory was already assured.

Scorers for Antrim: C Timoney 1-5, (0-2f), M Cooper 2-1, C Kelly & E Gallagher (1f) 0-2 each.

Scorers for Limerick: D O’Brien 1-4 (0-1f), Louise Higgins 1-0, Y Moynihan, T Mulcaire, K Campbell & Leanne Higgins 0-1 each.

ANTRIM: C McCoy; Eimear Kelly (St Ergnats, Moneyglass), B Scullion, G Campbell; N Kelly, C Mullan, D McAteer; G McCann, M McCann; Eimear Kelly (Creggan Kickhams), S Daykin, M Cooper; C Kelly, C Timoney, B McClenaghan.
Subs: E Gallagher for E Kelly (Creggan Kickhams) (h/t), C Carey for Daykin (46), A McElroy for Cooper (60).

LIMERICK:
E O’Shaughnessy; M O’Brien, S Healy, T Power; E McGuire, H Fogarty, S Larkin; P Donnelly, Y Moynihan, T Mulcaire; K Campbell, Louise Higgins, D O’Brien.
Subs: E Enright for Larkin (20), N Richardson for Moloney (h/t), Leanne Higgins for Power (40), M.I. Casey for Garvey (50).

Referee: T Lennon (Dublin).

P7 Championship Blitz

Well done to our young hurlers who were runners up in the P7 championship blitz last Saturday. They won their first two matches against Randalstown and Rasharkin before losing to a strong Creggan side by a couple of goals in the final.

There were strong performances throughout the team. Luke and Sean O’Rawe were as solid as The Rock of Cashel, in goal and full back respectively, while youngest brother Conor showed that he has a gift for hurling as well as that associated with the Blarney Stone. The twin engines of the team, Ryan McGarry and Ronan Ward battled incessantly at midfield winning countless possession and setting up attacks. Ciarán Neeson latched onto a lot of quality ball from the backs and midfield and despatched some majestic scores. Conor Cosgrove showed his versatility with virtuoso performances in both attack and defence while Patrick O’Hara was a constant torment and threat to opposition defences.

The lads had great support from the U14 footballers and from our trio of cheerleaders; Roisin, Maura and Gloria. Your encouragement was much appreciated.

Many of our young hurlers have been punching, (metaphorically), above their age for much of this year in the U12 league so we were delighted that they had this opportunity, along with the P6 blitz the previous weekend, to demonstrate how well they can perform against teams of similar age.

Good athletes will always be in demand and unfortunately some players were unable to come along on Saturday due to fixture clashes and other sporting commitments. We will try to arrange any remaining fixtures so that players can play and take part in all their chosen sports and activities.

Juvenile Presentation Evening

The annual presentation for U6, U8 and U10s is on next Monday evening, 28th September from 18:30 to 20:00. All players will receive a medal in recognition of their endeavours throughout the year and the U10 Indoor Championship winning team will be presented with their trophy.

A separate presentation event for U12, U14 and U16s will be held in the New Year.

Juvenile Hurling Training Times

The presentation evening marks the end of the juvenile football season. We intend to continue with juvenile hurling training for a while longer. This will be discussed, along with any changes to times and days, at the meeting on Thursday night.

All Saints V Lisburn:U-14 South West League Shield Final

September 19, 2009
12:00 pmto1:00 pm

All Saints V Lisburn @ Randalstown, throw in 12 noon.
SW League Shield Final

Get Behind Our Young Saints

Our U-14 Footballers will contest the final of the South West League Shield Final on Saturday against Lisburn at Randalstown. The throw in at the Whitehill venue is 12.00 noon and the club are urging as many supporters/members to make their way there to cheer on our young saints. This fine squad of players have been in very impressive form of late taking some very noticeable scalps en route to the final in the form of Rasharkin, Moneyglass and Ballycastle. The boys have been training hard all year under the expert guidance of Declan Agnew and Damian Gillan and both men have put alot of time and effort into this squad of players both this season and last.
Lisburn will pose formidable opposition on Saturday to the Saints as they are very much a stylish yet dogged team who have also this season taken some ‘bigger’ teams down a peg or two this season. For the record both teams finished on 14 points in the final League standings, so there really is nothing between the two sides; expect a very tight game.
Good luck to the boys for Saturday, from all at the All Saints club.
