Senior Footballers back in Championship Action
Friday 21st August
Antrim Senior Football Championship:
All Saints v Portglenone
@ Ahoghill, Throw-In 7.15pm
All Saints senior footballers are back in Championship action this Friday night.
Following their thrilling Intermediate Football Championship victory last year, All Saints have made the step up to the senior grade and have been drawn against neighbours, Casements Portglenone.
All Saints have stumbled through their league campaign so far this year, but following victory away to St Enda’s last week, they will be hoping that this is the beginning of a rich run of form as they take on Division 1 side Portglenone.
We would encourage as many supporters as possible to make the journey to Ahoghill on Friday evening … it is without doubt that the support during last year’s Championship was worth a few points every game so let’s let everyone know THE SAINTS ARE COMING!

All Saints hosts Children from Belarus
Monday 27th of July saw the club host a number of children from Belarus. These children come from areas that were affected by the Chernobyl Nuclear disaster in 1986.
An estimated 100 to 150 million curies of radiation (primarily radioactive isotopes of iodine and cesium) escaped into the atmosphere before cleanup crews were able to bring the fires under control and stabilize the situation some two weeks later. Initially, prevailing winds carried the radioactivity northwest from the plant across Belarus and into Poland and Sweden, where heightened radiation levels detected on April 28 first brought the accident to the world’s attention. Subsequently, from May 1 to 5, wind patterns shifted so that the bulk of radioactivity was carried more directly north and northeast, over Belarus and southwestern Russia.
The full dimensions of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster (the worst single accident of the industrial age) are unknown to this day. But nearly 16 years later, the suffering continues and the possibility of another nuclear accident remains although the Chernobyl Plant was finally shutdown in 2000.
On December 15, 2000, the last reactor in operation at the Chernobyl site was shut down and the phase of decommissioning began. The fate of the fourth reactor where the tragic accident occurred in 1986 is as yet undetermined.
The contaminated area of Ukraine and Belarus is about 61,780 square miles – the size of England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
Birth rates in Belarus have fallen 50 percent. Thyroid cancer, particularly among children, is up 285 percent in Belarus. About 7,000 people in Russia alone are believed to have died from the accident (The Ukraine Ministry of Health estimates as many as 125,000 deaths in the Ukraine). Belarus spends 20 percent of its annual budget coping with Chernobyl’s aftermath; Ukraine, four percent; Russia, one percent.
Each year kind local families host groups of children from the affected area.
The children participated in the club’s juvenile training session. They were then treated to refreshments, an exhibition of Irish Dancing and presented with a full playing kit and GAA posters. Many thanks to the children themselves in making our visitors feel so welcome.

All Saints Young Players represent Antrim Teams
In recent weeks, a number of All Saints brightest young prospects have had the great honour of representing Antrim Development Squads.
At U14 and U15 level, James Gillan and Paddy McAleer respectively have been playing with the South-West Antrim Development Squads.
Earlier in the year, Katie Connolly, Orla Killough, Emma Laverty and Deirdre O’Kane were all part of the Antrim U14 ladies who won the Ulster B Championship.
Just last week (8th August) Rory McVeigh played for the Antrim U17 Development Squads in a blitz organized by Ulster GAA in Owenbeg, Dungiven. Ciaran Shannon was also due to play in this blitz but unfortunately missed it as he was on holidays.
However, Peter ‘Pizza’ McReynolds and Emmett Killough were to go one step better …
On Wednesday 8th July, the Ulster GAA organised an U16 Development Squad blitz in Croke Park as part of the GAA 125 celebrations.
Peter and Emmett were chosen as part of the Antrim squad and played 2 games against Tyrone and Donegal on the hallowed turf.
To wrap up the day, all the other players were also given a tour of the Croke Park museum and stadium.
Congratulations to all our young stars and we hope these experiences will inspire them to strive to be the best players they can be, and hopefully this is only the beginning of seeing them in the Saffron jerseys of Antrim.

Saints Crash out of Junior Hurling Championship
Antrim Junior Hurling Championship:
All Saints 0-06 Creggan 4-12
All Saints crashed out of the Junior Hurling Championship at the hands of a more skilful and efficient Creggan team at wet and miserable Ahoghill on Monday night.
Under-foot conditions were very wet and accompanied with a strong breeze and rain, it made for difficult hurling. However, it was Creggan who started off the better side with the wind in their backs in the first half.
All Saints certainly found it hard to adapt to the conditions and gave away several frees due to mis-timed tackles, the majority of which were tapped over the bar by Thomas McCann. Mid way through the first half the impressive McCann broke through the All Saints defence and fired a shot to bottom right hand corner of the net. Aided by a couple of excellent long range points from midfielder Michael Maguire, Creggan went in with a 1-11 to 0-01 lead at the interval, the sole All Saints score coming from a Paul Scullion free 5 minutes before half time.
With the strong breeze at their backs, Saints took the field early and were hopeful of drawing themselves back into the game, but they were dealt a sucker punch in the opening minutes as a long ball was spilled by Saints’ goalkeeper Gerry Maybin and Creggan full-forward Conor McCann scrambled the ball into the net. To the Saints’ credit, they did not drop their heads and continued to put their opponents under pressure. Liam Cassley got their first score of the second period as he powered through and sent a driven shot towards the Creggan goal only for a defender to deflect it over the bar for a point. Cassley’s midfield partner Damian Kelly also chipped in with 2 well-worked points in a row and it looked as if the Saints were finding their feet. However, Creggan responded with a Conor McCann free and another couple of scrambled goals to effectively finish the game as a contest.
All Saints continued to bombard balls into the Creggan goalmouth in the final 10 minutes, but it was not to be their day and they could not find a way through. Paul Scullion fired over a ‘70 in the dying minutes but it was nothing more than a consolation score.
All Saints: Gerry Maybin, Francis Casey, Enda Casey, Gerard Maybin, Mark McGaughey, Colm Hasson, Damian Gillan, Damian Kelly (0-02), Liam Cassley (0-01), Brian McToal, Gary Miskella, Kieran Butler, Paul Scullion (0-02 f, 0-01 ‘70), Sean O’Kane, Michael McCarry.
Subs: Damien Casey for Damian Gillan, Danny McCormack for Gerard Maybin
Battling Young Saints Claim Important Victory
SWFL U-14
ALL SAINTS 5-8 ST ENDA’S 2-6
All Saints U14’s got back to winning ways on Friday night with a terrific performance against a previously unbeaten St Enda’s side. They started well playing with a strong breeze in the first half and opened the scoring with a long range point. St Enda’s replied with one of their own before a strong run and finish into the net from James Gillan gave them a 3 point lead.
St Enda’s were playing the better football though and only a great save from Dylan Little prevented them from levelling the scores. However they knocked over a couple of points and a goal in the dying minutes of the half meant they led at the break by 2 points.
Another fantastic save in the opening minute of the second from Little seemed to galvanise the young Saints and they started to play they type of football they are capable of. A superb move involving Gillan, Ciaran McLarnon and Caolon Loughran ended up with Loughran firing into the top corner and they never looked back from that.
In defence Stephen McAllister had got to grips with St Enda’s danger man and the Slemish Pk team began to play a shorter hand passing game which was paying off. Loughran extended the lead with a couple of well pointed frees and when he got his second goal Saints lead by seven. St Edna’s rallied with a fortunate goal but further goals for Gillan and from Connell Lemon meant that Saints ran out comfortable winners by eleven points.
This was a great team performance in terrible conditions and the team can be proud of the determination they showed and must now carry this on to the end of the season. Well Done Lads
