The joy and elation over Antrim’s fantastic Ulster Semi-final win over Cavan the previous evening was obvious on the faces of all at the Parish’s Annual Sportsday on Sunday past, where at a sun ’soaked’ Slemish Park the onlookers and participants were treated to a whole host of activities. Our traditional races started the day off and the results of these can be viewed below. A few more novelty races were included this year and this seemed to inject a bit of life into the whole proceedings, especially when the hotly contested Men’s sack race took to the track! With a whole host of activities going on around the sports including: Soak the Mentor, Super Slide, face painting, Penalty Kicks (Juvenile & Senior), puck through the tyre, Irish Dancing and a Kids and Adults Activity Hunt, there was plenty to keep all ages contented and busy. And for those that hadn’t had their Sunday Lunch, Grainne, Donna and Hector treated us to a grand B-B-Q, and for those who wished to follow it up with a sweet there was an ice cream on hand. A blast from the past was the re-introduction of the tug-o-war competition which pitted Men, women and children from all the different areas of the parish against each other. This brought back happy memories for those that remember the old Sports Days back at Hugomont, great criac was had by all at this event. Our U-12 Footballers concluded our day for us with a fine exhibition of skills in their challenge match against Glenravel. All in all a great day was had and with a few more events and novelty ideas for next year we can all make sure that Parish Sports Day becomes a more prominent fixture on our social calendar…just like the good old days. We might even bring back the Pillow Fights and Donkey Races!
