Indoor Hurling Leagues
The 2010 hurling season kicks off in January with the start of the North Antrim indoor leagues. Games are played over three weekends. The first week is an open draw with teams playing each other at a series of venues. In the second week teams are grouped into sections, depending on their performance in the first week. Teams in each section play against each other and the two top teams in each section progress to the finals which are held at Seven Towers Leisure Centre. Our U10s reached the finals in the last two years and are current champions, so there is a great depth of experience in this year’s U12 squad.
The U12 campaign starts on Saturday 09th January at St Patrick’s College Broughshane Rd. Matches satrt at 10:00am. Players should be at the school for 09:40
Our U10s start the journey to retain their title on 30th January. Venues have to be confirmed.

Juvenile Development – What Next?
Following our very successful juvenile seminar last November please find attached a copy of the main details to emerge from both the event and discussions since. The attached document contains detail on the information gathered, the suggestions made and most importantly possible ways to improve our juvenile activity even more.
Moving forward we plan to develop an action plan in relation to juvenile development over the short, medium and long term. In order to do so we need to hear the thoughts of all associated with the club in relation to the document content. This draft plan will be developed in January and members/ parents etc are asked to e. mail comments to J. Brady (jamesgbrady@hotmail.com) before the new year.
We would encourage you to take the time to comment on the document as there is nothing more important to the future success of the club than its current and future juvenile members.
Thanking you in advance for taking the time.
Jim

Review of 2009 Season
The 2009 season is almost over us with only our underage Hurlers brave enough to represent us at this time of the year. Our U-12 & U8 Hurlers still have blitzes to compete in before 2010 is upon us. Many thanks to all our playing members, juvenile and senior for providing us all with great enjoyment and satisfaction throughout the year. All age groups from Under 6 to Senior have filled everyone in the club with enormous pride throughout the year. Many thanks also to all those that have helped out with the many teams over the course of the year, parents, coaches, managers, helpers, supporters;all are required to help our club run in the efficient manner that it does. The next five years will be pivotal ones in the club’s history with the exciting Quinn Park venture ahead of us, and also the club’s juvenile development plan and communications strategy to be put in place. There are without doubt very important and exciting years ahead for the All Saints Club, but it is imperative that we have the backing of the whole club to carry out all the plans that have been laid… exisiting members young and old, prospective members, parents of our juveniles, senior non-playing members, senior playing members of all codes…now more than ever your club needs you. Please support the club in any fundraising initiatives that we have planned for the next year and beyond.
What follows is the review of the playing season for 2009:
FOOTBALL
UNDER 6
Our under 6’s made great improvements throughout the season. After every skills training session, the kids enjoyed mini matches, which due to both teams commitment inevitably ended in draws! Attendances of 20 – 30 both indoor and outdoor are very encouraging for the clubs future and it was great to see the increasing number of parents supporting these sessions
UNDER 8
We had a great bunch of under 8 players who once again this year participated in the Go Games mini leagues. Our boys were a credit to the club at all times and always gave 100% on the field. This was rewarded with silverware being won at the Finals Day in Aldergrove.
Under 10
2009 was a great year for the All Saints U-10 squads. Training started in early April and finished with the St Brigid’s 11 a-side tournament in Mid October.
We had some outstanding performances during the ‘Go Games’ League and spirits were high going into the final blitz in Aldergrove.
In the knockout stages the ‘Ulster’ team reached the cup semi-final against Carryduff when all spectators were treated to a fantastic game of football. All Saints were two points up with one minute to go only for a last minute goal against us proving to be our downfall. The ‘Leinster’ team reached the cup semi-final and again were narrowly defeated. We had some memorable performances during the day by both squads.
We were also invited to play in the St Brigid’s 11-a- side tournament in Belfast where 24 of the top teams in Ulster where there by invitation only. This was a great honour for players and mentors alike. On the field of play we reached the shield semi-final where we were pipped at the post by the eventual winners, St Galls.
The mentors would like to thank all the members of the U-10 squads for all their efforts in training and the way they conducted themselves both on and off the field.
The future for All Saints looks very good with many very promising players about to break through.
This age group have also taken part in a number of “cross-over” training sessions with Ballymena Rugby Club.
Our thanks also to all the parents for their support in many ways especially transport and refreshments on match days.
Thanks also to our sponsors of kit and equipment.
Under 12
The big news to hit us just before the start of the 2009 season was the new format for the forthcoming U12 season. The traditional 15-A-Side league format on a full sized pitch, being replaced with two smaller teams on smaller pitches with no official league. Initially the new system was greeted with universal disapproval, however by the end of the season quite a few of the original dissenters had been converted.
The smaller teams / pitches took absolutely nothing away from the competitiveness and enjoyment of the players, and both the Lions and Tigers teams started off with impressive wins over their Glenravel counterparts. Defeat to very strong Aldergrove teams, was followed up by two very impressive wins at home to Glenavey, an incredible 6-4 notched up by Kieran Neeson helped the Tigers to a comfortable 7-12 to 2-2 victory, whilst for the Lions two goals apiece from the impressive Paul Marrs, and defender turned attacker Jack Mc Dermott helped the Lions to a narrow but impressive 4-7 to 4-6 victory.
With some teams failing to field (Aghagallon and Ballycastle both failed to field at Slemish Park) the season was somewhat disjointed, but none the less there were still some fantastic games. Josh King with 5 points and a goal from Ryan Mc Kenna secured the Tigers an impressive away win at Tir Na nOg, whilst for the Lions, Captain marvel Connell Lemon supported by his wing men Niall Shannon Conor Gallagher and Anthony Mc Avoy were putting in impressive displays on a consistent basis
We reverted back to 15-A-Side for the shield competition, but this seemed to transform early season opposition into completely different teams? With St Enda’s who had been put to the sword at Slemish Park, putting out a team that were quite simply too big and strong for our U12’s to compete against. However the performance of Thomas Brady against the big boys was worth the admission fee alone.
Last game of the season was away to Rasharkin, the same opposition who ended our 2008 campaign with a heavy defeat. However there was to be no repeat of 2008, and we witnessed arguably the best performance of the year to run out comfortable winners 1-3 to 5-11. Paul Marrs with 1-2 and first half points from Owen Campbell and Connell Lemon sent All Saints into the break leading by 0-3 to 3-5. In the second half Anthony Mc Guigans superb 1-1 was only outshone by Ballymena’s very own Bomber Liston (May need some explanation) Luke O Rawe who kicked over two superb points. Ryan Mc Gill and Emmet McAllister capped of fine seasons with memorable performances.
A fantastic way to end the season, and with an end of season pit stop for refreshments on the way home it was a very contented and quiet (as lots of sweets and juice were consumed) U12 bus that made its way back to Ballymena.
Roll on 2010!
Under 14
The U14’s 2009 season was very much a “mixed bag”, starting with two losses against Glenravel and Aldergrove, the boys then went on a five week winning streak, most notable victories during this period were a record breaking score against Dunloy and a defeat of eventual League runners up Glenavy. The season then took a downward tilt with several losses broken by a great victory over the League winners St Enda’s, who had been unbeaten until meeting All Saints. For the record, the U14’s Played 14, Won 7, Lost 7 and finished 9th.
It wasn’t until the U14 Shield Competition that the hard work throughout the season paid off. All Saints were drawn in the Preliminary Round against close rival’s Rasharkin. In a closely fought match at Slemish Park, All Saints prevailed due to a last gasp goal. Next up was Moneyglass, again this was a close match on a wet pitch, again All Saints were victorious. These matches showed how much the boys had progressed, as both Rasharkin (twice) and Moneyglass had beaten them in the earlier part of the season.
The semi-final was against Ballycastle in front of a big crowd at Glenravel. Yet again this was another close match with All Saints doing enough to reach the Shield Final against Lisburn for the first time in several years.
True to form the final held at Randalstown was another close game with both sides level at half-time. All Saints matched Lisburn all the way but just couldn’t finish off some great moves. Lisburn proved to be more clinical in front of goal and ran out winners.
All in all it was a very good season for the U14’s, the team showed dedication and determination throughout the year, with many of the current squad still eligible for next season their experience this year will stand to them.

REPRESENTATIVE HONOURS
James Gillan played five games for the SW Antrim U14 Development Squad.
UNDER 16
All in all this was a mixed bag of a season for our U16’s. Our league form was inconsistent and we ended up dropping silly points which ultimately saw us finish 6th in the league. This meant that we were in the Shield competition where we lost out to eventual winners Cargin at the ¼ stage. Our best performances came in the Breslin Cup (SW U16 Championship). We defeated St Endas and a strong (undefeated) St Comgalls side to qualify for the semi final against Dunloy. We came agonisingly close but Dunloy won out by 2 points after extra time. The fact that Dunloy went on to win the competition showed us how close we were to delivering silverware.
Minors
Despite playing in the Minor League Shield expectations were low going into the 2009 season due to the low number of “Minor” players within the club. The squad consisted of 8 minors of which 5 were U17 and the balance was made up with 11 U16 players.
Our first game was away to Tir na nOg and despite being in front for the whole game a last minute goal meant losing by one point. Further losses to Lisburn, St Endas and Glenravel meant we were sitting at the bottom of the table after 4 games played.
Next was the Laverty Cup 1st round where we were drawn against Creggan who were undefeated sitting at the top of the Minor League ( a real David and Goliath draw). The team gave a fantastic display but unfortunately ended the game six points down.
In the next League game we were defeated by Dunloy however the lads were really working hard together as a team and this was evident when we won our next 2 games comprehensively against Antrim and Aldergrove.
The 2nd half of the league saw much improved team performances and saw victories against Glenravel, Antrim and Tir na nOg. The Glenravel and Tir na nOg performances showed how much the team had improved from the earlier reverses.
In the all county Minor B championship we were paired against Ardoyne in the preliminary round. The match was an excellent game which was nip and tuck the whole way but unfortunately we finished on the wrong side of a 2 point deficit. The fact that Ardoyne went on to contest the Championship final shows how good our performance was and if we had not been missing the services of R Mc Veigh who was working in Scotland that week I believe we would have beat them.
The team showed fantastic improvement in the latter half of the year and the statistic of 5 wins in our last 8 league games confirmed this. There were some great individual performances through the year but the teamwork and team spirit was abundant in many performances and bodes well for next year.
Only 3 of the squad are overage next year and with the experience gained this year we are confident of a successful season for the minors in 2010. The 3 players who now move on to senior football (Chris Mc Gaughey, Barney Rea and Dara Walsh) made a significant contribution to our success this year and I have no doubt that if they show the same effort and commitment in the future they will be part of the senior set up for years to come.
Congratulations to all the boys for a very creditable year and thanks for the commitment and support throughout the year.
Squad :
Paul Connolly, Vinny Esler, Emmet Killough, Conor Lemon, Paddy Mc Aleer, Paddy Mc Garry, Chris Mc Gaughey, Diarmuid Mc Nally, Peter Mc Reynolds, Rory Mc Veigh, Stephen O’Neill, Stevie O’Neill, Liam Quigley, Barney Rea, Dean Rostron, Ciaran Shannon, Ryan Stewart, James Timoney, Dara Walsh
Misc
During the year we also organised a successful Cul Camp, we also accommodated the under 6’s with the first ever Saffron Og camp. Both were very well attended and the kids all really enjoyed themselves as well as improving their skill levels.
We also had a visit from children from Belarus which proved to be a big success. It was great to see kids from differing cultures enjoying sport together.
Our juveniles were well represented on the various County Development Squads.
- James Gillan was on the under 14 team
- Patrick Mc Aleer was on the under 15 team
- Emmet Killough and Peter Mc Reynolds were on the under 16 team (which played in Croke Park and
- Rory Mc Veigh and Ciaran Shannon were on the under 17 team.
We also had 4 of our under 14 girls (Deirdre O Kane Emma Laverty, Orla Killough and Katie Connolly) who won the Ulster B Championship with Antrim before losing out to Roscommon in the All Ireland Semi Final.
Senior Footballers
After the highs of the 2008 season, 2009 was a season that offered and promised much but resulted in merely an average season for the saints’ senior footballers. With the success of the season before and the winning of the County Intermediate C’Ship it was hoped that D1 would be a realistic target and with a favourable draw in the senior C’Ship, the outlook from all was an optimistic one. The Senior Football squad, which whilst having a few more experienced and ‘mature’ campaigners in their ranks were on the whole a young team hungry for more success after entering into the Ulster Cub C’Ship for the first time in the club’s history last season.
In the end neither the threat to push for D1 status or a scare in the senior C’Ship materialised. With only the second half of the season proving more fruitful in terms of league points, it was to come to late for a promotion push, which was a big shame as the two teams that were promoted: Ahoghill and Lamh Dhearg were two teams that were well within our grasp of beating on all the occasions that we played this year. Our record of 7 wins and 2 draws saw us amass a total of 16 points to finish joint joint 5th with Sarsfields. We recorded wins over Gort Na Mona (2), St Enda’s (2), Aghagallon (1), Rossa (1) & Tir na nOg (1), and two drawn games against Ahoghill and Dunloy.
It would be wrong to say that 2009 was an entirely fruitless season as we had two noteable trophies to bring home to Slemish Park this year. Easter 2009 saw our senior 7 a side team lift the International sevens trophy in London, defeating Glenswilly (Senior County Finalists in Donegal a few years back) in the final. May/June saw the Senior footballers account for Division one opposition in the form of Rasharkin to lift the Senior Feis Football Trophy after an exciting game in Feystown. The weekend of the All Ireland Final saw the seniors enter the Intermediate All Ireland 7s in Ratoth Co Meath, where they gave a good account of themselves, topping their group only to lose out to Greenlough of Derry in the knockout stages.
There were some consistent performers this year which included the likes of Liam Cassley, Paddy Logan, Damien Kelly, Micky McCarry, Eoin O’Kane, Seamus McAfee and Andy Kelly.
As mentioned earlier the nucleus of this side is fairly young, and with the lessons of this year behind them we will hopefully become a stronger team together and a more difficult team to beat. ‘Younger’ members of the team now need to step up to the mark in the coming season and take more responsibility; if this happen then 2010 could be a promising year for All Saints senior footballers.
A special word of thanks must go to Barney McCann for his total commitment and dedication to the team over the season, especially as he had to do this, for the most part, on his own. Many thanks Barney.
Camogie
Juveniles:
Turn outs at training were very good with average 12 at under 8 session and 30 at under 13s. All fixtures were completed and whilst not often on the winning side a much improved performance from last year. We had a number of tournaments that we participated in this year for the first time so it was nice to be recognised and invited by other teams. Thanks need to go to Monica Devlin and Una Devine for helping out in the coaching and attending most of the matches. Also thanks to parents for transport and their support of the Club. We are glad that the local primary schools are doing camogie as part of their curriculum as this has definitely helped in developing our sport.
Seniors:
Started season well and early doing indoor training from January in St Patricks (thanks to the school for providing this service). Thanks to Kenny McGaughey for coaching and to Karen Davis for managing the team. All fixtures were fulfilled and much improved performances were on display with us getting on the scoresheet regularly. We can only build on the current panel and with a number of the juveniles graduating to the senior team this can only augur well for the future.
Hurling
Juvenile Hurling
2009 was another busy year for our juvenile hurlers. We competed in leagues and championships at U16, U12 and U10, level and P4/P5 children played in a number of blitzes. Like last year we had insufficient numbers to field U14 and minor teams.
Indoor training sessions were held each week between November and April, these included nursery (P2 – P3), beginner and improver sessions. The Wednesday night sessions focussed on teaching and developing hurling skills and were complemented by Monday night Fundamental training. Training moved outdoors in April.
Competitions and Games
U8
U8s (P4 – P5) took part in a number of fun blitzes at the start of the year, before being subsumed into our U10 squad, where they formed an integral part of a successful squad.
U10
Indoor League Champions
In February our U10 team replicated the success of last year’s squad by reaching the final of the North Antrim Indoor Hurling League. We lost last year by a single goal in a match that went to extra time. This year the lads went one better beating Carndonagh 3:1 in an exciting final. At the award presentation, Cormac Lemon and Ryan McGarry accepted the winners’ trophy on behalf of the panel and took the first silverware of 2009 back to Slemish Park.
Outdoor Blitzes
The U10s went on to perform well in a number of outdoor blitzes during the year. They were unfortunate, in September, not to retain the NA Shield that they had won last year; however a Saturday fixture and clash with soccer decimated the team on the day.
Our P7 team were runners up the following week in a North Antrim Championship Blitz losing to a strong Creggan side in the final.
U12 League and Championship
This year we entered the North Antrim U12 League with a very young squad. All bar two players are eligible to play U12 again next year and over half of them are still U10. Many of the lads were therefore punching, (metaphorically), above their age in the U12 league. Initially we thought that they might not have coped, however we underestimated the character of these boys. Honest players will always give their best, and performance and attitude are much more important than score lines. We are proud to say that the lads excelled themselves in these areas throughout the league campaign. The experience gained will stand to them; with their rookie season over we are confident they will do well next year.
Ciarán Represents Antrim in Ulster Final
In September Ulster Council organised a hurling skills competition for U12s. Seventeen clubs were represented in the county Antrim heat. Ciarán Neeson finished in third place and qualified to represent Antrim in the Ulster final. Forty five competitors took part in the final, five from each county in Ulster. Ciarán came fourth overall, a tremendous achievement and a demonstration that All Saints hurlers can stand shoulder to shoulder with any company.
U16
Our U16s competed in league and championship. Initially numbers were limited and we struggled to field a full complement, however, as the year progressed more players came on board. They gelled into a formidable unit, producing some impressive performances and finished the season with a hat trick of wins.
Hurling Development Plan
The increased popularity of hurling within the club has brought accompanying challenges. It was apparent that we needed a more structured approach if we wished to progress.
Over the past few years North Antrim Coaching and Development Committee has run a coaching initiative in conjunction with the Munster Hurling Coaching Council. As part of this initiative we signed up to a scheme whereby a trained facilitator, Alec Campbell, visited the club to help us identify issues and generate ideas to move forward. We held a workshop in April, and a Hurling Development Plan was drawn up. This was fed into the overall club juvenile plan. We have been addressing the issues over the summer.
One of the most pleasing aspects of the initiative was the level of participation of parents and their consequent involvement in coaching. A number of parents attended a child protection course and attained a foundation level coaching qualification.
School Links
We continue to foster relationships with local schools. We helped the two new primary schools in their application for hurling equipment under an Ulster Council scheme. Both applications were successful and the schools received helmets, hurls and sliotars. It is encouraging to see Gaelic games promoted in the primary schools and we are delighted to help out in any way.
The fruits of the efforts were evident when St Colmcille’s were runners up in a Cumann na mBunscol seven-a-side hurling blitz in June. This coincided with an increased number of children attending training; demonstrating the mutual benefit of school/club cooperation.
2010
2010 will bring new challenges. We are confident that we will consolidate our position at U8, U10 and U12. We are concerned however how we will cater for U14, U16 and minor grades, due to players graduating up the ranks leaving inadequate numbers behind to field teams.
Promoting hurling can sometimes feel like swimming upstream towards a waterfall. But we will continue to celebrate our successes and tackle the issues in the knowledge that if you want something badly enough you can make it happen.
Appreciation
Juvenile mentors would like to take this opportunity to thank;
- Adair Arms Hotel for sponsoring our U8, U10 and U12 teams.
- North Antrim GAA for running competitions and blitzes throughout the year.
- Owen and Cormac Elliott, for organising fixtures and officiating at matches.
- All the teams we competed against during the year for their sportsmanship.
- Jim Brady and Brendan McKenna, the principals of St Brigid’s and St Colmcille’s, for their promotion of Gaelic Games in the primary schools.
- Mr. Cassidy, principal of St Louis for providing use of the school hall.
- Senior and juvenile committees for providing support, finance and facilities.
- Joe, Hector and Denis for cutting the grass and maintaining the pitches.
- Senior footballers for their awareness and good grace when the occasional stray sliotar flew across their paths on Wednesday night/Sunday morning training sessions.
- Parents and guardians for their support and help, bringing children to matches and training – and taking them home again!
- All our juveniles, they are a great bunch, a pleasure to work with and a credit to the club and their families.
Senior Hurling
This year there was no success on the field of play. We now find ourselves back in D4B that is unfortunate. We had 2 remaining games in the league and having spoken with the chairman it was agreed not to play these due to the likely hood of lack of players.
REFEREE’S – Our thanks are due to our whistleblowers Denis Rocks, Liam Donnelly and Owen Elliott, who continue to provide the necessary cover for our league games. It should be noted that Owen has made club history by achieving All Ireland Status by refereeing the Nicky Rackard Final in Croke Park.

U8s Come of Age
Our U8s travelled to Antrim Forum on Sunday to play an indoor blitz with Creggan and Rasharkin. Creggan hosted the event and fielded two teams. It was non stop action all the way as a series of games were played over an hour.
Spearheaded by veteran campaigners Cormac Magill, and Conor O’Rawe, we had a number of players who lined out for All Saints for the first time. Caolan Kearney, James O’Boyle, Oisin O’Mullan and Ronan McKillop, were among those to make their debuts to inter club hurling.
They were magnificent. Their skill, tenacity and enthusiasm was infectious and a credit to the work done with them by their mentors and parents.
Glenavy were supposed to take part in the blitz but only two of their players turned up. Our lads showed great sportsmanship by inviting these children to join the All Saints team for the day. This was a nice gesture by the lads and a reminder that participating in Gaelic games provides opportunities to extend the hand of friendship and ensure that no one is excluded from taking part in sport.
Thanks to Creggan for organizing the event and inviting us along. We hope to reciprocate by hosting a similar blitz in the near future.
U12 Indoor Blitz
Our U12s did well at the North Antrim indoor aerial blitz, at Larne last Saturday. They had five very competitive matches; they won a couple, lost a couple and drew one. With almost enough to field two teams we alternated players to ensure that each got maximum playing time. This was a useful run out for the lads, allowing them opportunity to hone their lifting, catching and striking skills in a competitive arena. The quality of blocking and hooking was particularly impressive, we have been emphasising tackling skills at training over the past few weeks and it was pleasing to see how well they put this into practice.
The second round of the competition is on this Saturday at St Comgall’s High School in Larne. Glenavy, Rasharkin, St Enda’s, Cushendun, Creggan and Ballycastle provide the opposition. Games kick off at 10:00am. Cars will leave St Patrick’s College at 09:30am. Players should assemble at 09:20am. We expect to return to Ballymena between 12:30 and 13:00.
Date – Saturday 05th December
Time – 10:00 – 12:00
Venue – St Comgall’s High School, Larne
Transport – Cars depart St Patrick’s College at 09:30; assemble at 09:20.

U12 Indoor Blitz
North Antrim GAA is holding a series of indoor blitzes for U12s over the next few weekends. This is a fun based “aerial” competition designed to promote catching, lifting and striking.
