Saints finish year in Winning Style

ACFL Division 2
Glenavy 1-08 All Saints 2-08

All Saints Ballymena finished their year off in style with a deserved 3 point victory over newly promoted Glenavy. The recently crowned Intermediate County champions started the game much the brighter and a trade mark run and goal from Tiernan Walsh followed quickly by a superbly finished Liam Cassley effort put the Saints into a commanding early lead. But for some wasteful shooting in the first half the game could have been well out of Glenavy’s reach by half time. Glenavy notched up a few points toward the end of the half going into the break 4 adrift at 2-02 to 0-04.

The Saints started the second half at pace, notching up several good scores before Glenavy replied with a Ciaran Hamill point. Both teams emptied their benches as the game and season crawled to a conclusion with All Saints holding out to win 2-08 to 1-08.

The season will be deemed a success for both outfits with Glenavy finishing 2nd and gaining promotion to Division 1 behind comprehensive league champions Moneyglass and Ballymena recording their first championship title in 22 years.

All Saints Scorers: Liam Casley (1-0), Tiernan Walsh (1-0), Kevvy McAlaster (0-02), Barney McCann (0-02), Paul McCann (0-01), Terry Logan (0-02), Rob Curley (0-01)

Proposed new “Club All Saints” for AGM – EGM

A Chairde,

Please find attached constitution below for the formation of a club called “Club All Saints”. This will be discussed at our AGM and I would ask you to understand its content.

The purpose of this club will be raise funds for All Saints GAC under the lotto and other functions.

As you know we have borrowed fairly heavily from the bank for the opportunity of providing an additional pitch that is well underway. This needs to be addressed and the Committee considers that this could be significant in helping increasing funds. We need members to endorse this new venture.

We are really starting to show signs of improvement on the pitch and we need to match these off the pitch. If we all work together we can achieve our goals

There are a few motions to be past at the AGM so to speed up the meeting ( as you know I don’t like long meetings with no purpose/resolution) please make yourselves familiar with this document.

I also intend to publish my report of the year’s events for similar reasons. Hope to have this done before Friday evening and again if you can make yourselves familiar with this as well it would be a great help.

Most importantly this is possibly thee most important AGM the club will have held since its inaugural meeting and for this reason I would ask everyone to attend, especially parents of our young kids who ultimately will be the main benefactors.

Don’t be too concerned about getting lumbered with some major task. A great idea would be a super start.

Sorry for rambling but again this is very important.

Juvenile Development Seminar

As you are aware the club is organising a Juvenile Development Seminar on Sat 29th November in St Brigid’s PS. The event will run from 9.30am-1.00pm. The major information gathering will take place during round table discussion.

We were hoping that members could join us on the day and act as either facilitators or recorders. In the case of a recorder this will involve recording the thoughts of the group. Facilitators will be charged with responsibility for encouraging discussion around a central theme eg: Coaching and feeding the findings back to the whole group.

The sub committee organising the event would like to meet with all recorders/ facilitators this Thursday, 20th Nov at 7.00pm in St Brigid’s PS to outline the format of the day and to discuss the roles.

If you can’t make the meeting but would still be able to help on on the 29th that would be great. You can let us know.

The success of the event will rely on the quality of the discussion. Prompts etc will be provided for each facilitator and the theme for discussion will be shared closer to the day once questionnaires have been received.

Please reply by e. mail to J. Brady (jamesgbrady@hotmail.com) indicating whether you would be in a position to assist in this matter and if you can whether you can attend next Thursdays meeting or not.
We also still need to hear from those people who are planning to attend the seminar as delegates. Without accurate numbers the seating etc will be very difficult to organise.

Thanks for your time. Jim

All Saints keep up the fight to stay in Division 2

ACFL Division 2:
Sarsfields 2-8 All Saints 3-9

Even with an Intermediate County Title under their belt All Saints are still in the middle of a relegation dogfight with Con Magee’s and Davits’GAC.  Even though the referee failed to turn up for the game, All Saints were forced to play the match with the Sarsfields manager taking charge of the whistle, as the Saints crucially needed the 2 points with the cut off date of Sunday 23rd November looming.

Unfortunately for Ballymena manager Barney McCann was unavailable due to work commitments, as well as a number of players’ injured including influential midfielder Paddy Logan.  His side did their chances of survival the best they could thanks to 4 top class saves from veteran goalkeeper Michael O’Kane securing them the victory over a young and impressive Sarfields outfit at the ‘Bear Pit’ on Sunday afternoon.

In what was to be a dogged match; Sarfields started the brighter of the two sides, putting over 2 of their first four attempts before half-forward, Tiernan Walsh, powered through to get Ballymena off the mark with what was their first attempt of the game.

All Saints struggled to get to grips with the young illusive Belfast outfit, who continued racking up the wides as well as the points to take a 3 point lead before Terry Logan did his best impression of his older brother, by slotting one over from 30yards in his debut at centre half forward.

Sarfields ever attacking left half-back was causing All Saints all types of problems till his opponent Conor Crilly decided he had enough by racing through the Sarsfields defence to cooly slot home a goal, putting Ballymena ahead for the first time in the game.

At this stage Sarsfield’s were playing a very direct game towards 6ft 5 John Barr who was breaking a lot of ball to his teammates in the full forward line.  All Saints full back line coped well but they had their keeper Micky O’Kane to thank for making a number of point blank saves to keep the sides level.  Damian Kelly and Conor Crilly worked the ball out of defence to set up Paul McCann, who curled a shot over the bar from 25yards putting the Slemish Park outfit up by one at half time.

The second half began as it finished with Paul McCann adding his second point of the game before Sarfields left half forward stuck over his second and third points.

All Saints then began to show why they were Intermediate Champions with Sean McVeigh and Tiernan Walsh driving the Saints forward and knocking balls in on top of Paul McCann.  Liam Cassley and Peter McCann benefitted the most from Paul McCann’s breaking ball as each one pounced and grabbed a goal a piece.

All Saints were up by 5 at this stage and in the driving seat to then suddenly be put under pressure from Sarfields as the Belfast men scored a point and had a controversial penalty decision go their way in quick succession.

The penalty was a battle of the two keepers as Sarfields goalkeeper left his net to take the spot kick.  The Belfast man slotted it confidently home but Michael O’Kane must have felt hard done by as he instinctively dove to the correct side, to then see the ball hit a divot and bounce over his outstretched arm.

All Saints brought on Aidan Walsh for the hard working Conal Rodgers and moved Tiernan Walsh into centre half back as well as Seamus McAfee to Full Back.

These moves proved to be pivotal in securing the win for Ballymena as both players began to flourish in their new roles.  McAfee spoiled any high ball into Barr, while Walsh made some vital stops to the Sarfields attack; he continued making powerful runs that were vital in setting up the full-forward line to each get another point apiece.

The war wounds to Barney Logan, Andy Kelly and Kevin MacAllister showed that this was not a game for the faint at heart as All Saints had to grind out the victory against an up and coming Stewartstown Road outfit.

The win sees All Saints move to 13 points with 3 remaining games.  In the day’s other games, Glenavy beat Davitts and Dunloy beat Glenravel; a result which see’s the Con Magee’s relegated to Division 3.

All Saints: Michael O’Kane, Seamus McAfee, Andy Kelly, Kevin McAllister, Conal Rogers, Michael McCarry, Damien Kelly, Barney Logan, Sean McVeigh, Tiernan Walsh, Terry Logan, Conor Crilly, Liam Casley, Paul McCann, Peter McCann

Subs:
Blood Sub – John Donaghy for  Kevin MacAllister
Aidan Walsh for Conal Rogers

AGM – Reports

A Chairde,

Can I ask the mentors of teams to combine to give me a report on the major achievements in both Juvenile and Senior Football, Hurling, Ladies Football and Camogie. Please include items such as personal achievement, involvement at County or Development squads.

If this could be done over the next week it would give me time to circulate to members rather than having to read and comprehend the reports during the evening – and also making the meeting shorter.
